“And the second thing?”
Darius stood from the sofa, and wandered over to the living room windows, staring outwards as the air in the room grew tense. I felt uneasy and unsure of what was going to come next.
“You see, it’s a bit complicated, and um, kind of hard to explain.” Jackson was stalling.
“Spit it out,Jack. What the hell is wrong?!”
“It’s, well, you and Darius.”
“Let me guess, we’re related or some bullshit?”
“Well, no, but that would be such a plot twist!” He laughed as did Darius from behind me, breaking the tension just a little.
“You and him, you’re destined. As in written in the stars, destined. The reason you fainted wasn’t because he’s an epic kisser, it was because your soul clicked into place with him. He’s your soulmate.”

Isat cross-legged on the small armchair in the living room that faced the window, my hands were wrapped around a warm cup of coffee that Darius had insisted would make me feel better.
The word soulmate kept replaying in my mind, not the words that Eric may, in fact, be a spy, and had betrayed our entire family.
Just a short hour ago, I was wrapped up in passion and wanting, and now I felt as if I didn’t even know who I was anymore. I kept repeating the words ‘I am Hayley Van Helsing' in my mind, but I didn’t feel it, I didn’t feel I was that powerful vampire hunter anymore.
“Are you alright?”
Darius kneeled in front of me and placed his hand on my knee and part of me wanted to kick him off, throw my coffee in his face, and leave, but I was rooted to the spot. And the concern in his eyes made my stomach turn, what was he so worried about?
Why did this bother him? Soulmates are nothing but a love notion, a fairy tale. They weren’t real, and I most certainly wasn’t going to be stuck on another path I didn’t choose. Fuck fate, and the universe.
“I need to get back to headquarters and find out about this stuff on Eric.”
“Jackson said for you to stay here.”
“And Jackson isn’t the one who gives the orders.”
I stood from my chair and headed to the bedroom to grab the rest of my things. My clothes were still slightly damp from the rain. Darius was quickly in front of me blocking the bedroom door so I couldn’t leave.
“I will break your face if you don’t move.”
“I know you will, and the last thing I want you to feel is like you’re stuck here, however, Jackson said he will be in touch when they get a lock on Eric and once, they do, you can go and kick his ass.” He held up his hands to surrender.
“Hell! I will even help you do it as I want to punch the guy for sleeping with you.”
“How did you…?”
“You smell like him.”
My eyes widened as I crossed my arms, of course I smelt like Eric. Even if I had showered, his scent would have been all over me to the senses of a vampire, and Darius was more than just an ordinary vampire.
“I know I can’t lay a claim on you, but it has been annoying me since I found you in the garage.”
“You will never lay claim to me.”
He looked at me a little hurt at my words, and I used my strength to push past him and back into the living room. Almost like lightning, he appeared in front of me and again blocked the door to the outside world. Now he was starting to piss me off.
“Please, Hayley, I’m not trying to piss you off but you’re acting like an idiot. Jackson mentioned they couldn’t locate Angelique or her forces either. She’s using magic, and how do we know she isn’t just waiting for you to turn up? My job is to keep you safe.”
I wasn’t someone who hid away from my enemies, I was someone who met them head on. The first one to run into battle screaming at the top of my lungs with my weapon ready.
