If I were from the dark ages, I would have been a warrior Queen fighting for the justice, and safety of her people. That’s what I was meant to do, not sit, and hide in someone’s home, making goo goo eyes at the next guy she saw.

“Darius, I am going to forget this whole soulmate bullshit. I have a job to do. I have to find Eric, and ask him what the hell is going on, so you can either join me or move the fuck out of my way because either way, I am going through that door.”

He stood there for a second or two, obviously weighing his options. After our sparring session he knew I could easily take him down, and I was still unsure if I could stake him or not.

Did being his so-called soulmate stop me from killing him? Or would I simply lose a part of myself by doing so? Was I even willing to test this theory out?

“I guess I’m coming with you, let me get my coat.”

Waiting for him to step aside and head to the bedroom, I took my chance to leave the building, and headed outside. My leather jacket gave me some warmth as I stepped out into the alleyway, but this storm was not letting up.

My bike was hidden under an old sheet, and I held the keys tightly in my pocket. There was a sudden noise, as if something had dropped or been knocked over. It was only a pin drop, and any normal human wouldn’t have heard it, but I was blessed with ears like a bat.

Spinning around with my gun at the ready, I turned and saw I was surrounded by vampires and werewolves alike. My eyes widened in shock as Darius came from the same doorway but was promptly jumped on and quickly subdued.

“Shit.”

“Shit is right.”

Her. The crowd in front of me parted, and it was as if the rain had suddenly stopped. Her hair was jet black against her snow-like complexion and scarlet lips were striking. She was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen.

She wore a black corset with ruby red lace on the top that made her breasts even more prominent, while her legs were wrapped in the tightest black jeans, and her black stiletto boots were to die for.

“You must be Hayley.”

“And you must be Angelique.”

“Oh wonderful, no need for introductions then. Fabulous.”

The smile she directed at me was cold as ice, exposing the tips of her fangs. She reminded me of a siren, a creature that could capture you with their looks, only to rip your head off shortly after. I had read many accounts about her, but none even expressed her great beauty, no wonder she managed to overcome Louis, she must have bewitched him.

“Jacob, be a dear and take the hybrid back to the manor. Hayley and I need to have a little chat.”

“No Hayley, don't!”

Darius shouted as he was being pulled away from me and disappeared into the crowd, his shouting still heard from a distance.

“I don’t chat to monsters, sorry.”

I still held my gun up in front of me as I watched from the corners of my eyes as her werewolf minions took a few steps closer towards me, clearly thinking they could take me off guard. Although I knew I would be able to shoot a few of them down, I would be overwhelmed, and end up injured if I tried to take this many on at once.

My heart started to throb and sting suddenly as a gunshot went off in the crowd, and I almost dropped to one knee, the pain excruciating and unbearable.

Dropping my gun, I clenched at my chest as I tried to catch my breath. What was this god-awful pain? I had never felt it before, was it magic?

“Oh good, I was hoping that would work.”

Angelique now stood above me with the same cold smile across her face. She bent down, and lifted up my face so I could look her dead in the eye as tears tried to break free, my vision becoming blurry.

“So, you’ve bonded with him? I did think that friend of yours was lying, trying to give himself more time, but I guess he was right. Which means I now owe him, and I hate owing people anything.”

She dropped my chin, and I fell forward, catching myself with my hands. She spoke as if I knew what she was talking about, did she mean the stupid soulmate thing? Was she referring to Eric as my friend?

“I will have to do away with him before he realises, I owe him a debt. How close are you to him? Actually, that doesn’t matter, you won’t need him once I’m done with you.”

“What – are – you – talking – about?”

Breathless still and trying desperately to gather my strength and wits about me, I pushed myself up, shaking as the pain coursed through my body.
