A kitchen, dining room, and living room, all perfectly decorated in black obsidian and grey. There was a large window across from the kitchen that overlooked part of the city and the river, considering we went downstairs, I didn’t expect this.

I expected something dark, damp, and awful and yet, the space would be the envy of many. It smelt of sandalwood and tobacco, a very manly and heavenly scented.

Shutting the door behind me, and then dead bolting it, Darius threw his jacket off over the dark grey sofa and started to unbutton his bloody shirt.

I continued to stand in the middle of the room looking around, taking in everything. The TV was large enough to fill the space on the wall and underneath it, a beautiful glass fireplace. Next to the wall was another corridor which I assumed towards the one bedroom and bathroom perhaps.

“Here, you look like you could use a drink.”

Handing me a glass of what smelt like spiced rum, I swung it back and handed him the empty glass. Huffing a laugh at me, he went back to the kitchen to refill it before leaving it on the counter.

“Believe it or not, this rum isn’t meant to be downed like some party girl on her first night out. Savour the taste at least.”

“I didn’t expect you to live in a home like this.”

“No, I bet you expected some shit-hole in the ground, or something filled with dust and dirt.”

“Kind of, I didn’t know you had such interior decorating taste either.”

“Ah, well I can’t take credit for that. When I brought the place, it was as you’d think, dirty, dusty, and falling apart and for a while I did live like that.”

“What changed?”

Wow, were we really having a conversation? One that didn’t involve threatening each other or potentially fighting for our lives. Looking at him now as he took a seat down in an armchair next to the fireplace, the first few buttons of his shirt undone, he kicked off his black boots and relaxed a little.

“I received a letter from your mother, that’s what changed.”

“Oh,” I was taken aback a little. I took hold of my glass and sat on the sofa watching him closely.

“It appeared almost out of thin air one night while I was sitting here, wallowing and brooding in the dark and it said I had to help you, along with giving you the necklace.”

My hand automatically went up to my neck where I had hidden the necklace under my t-shirt. I had put it back on shortly after reading the last of my mother's letter and was grateful I did.

“Do you know anything about the necklace?”

“All I know is that, you need to have it, it’s to be protected, and Angelique isn’t to have it.”

“Maybe that’s why the werewolves were at my place, they were looking for it.”

“Perhaps, but we won’t really find out though. You killed the main guy, or whatever he was.”

“Yeah, I’m not one for asking questions.”

“No, you just slice and dice. I’ve noticed you can’t really control it. You’re a killing machine, and it even scares me a little.”

I sat there for a moment holding my glass and pondered his words. I knew I was a killing machine but deep down, I always felt that if I had to stop, I would.Wouldn’t I?Of course, I would be able to stop if I had to and I had in the past, well, mostly.

“It doesn't scare me; I just don’t like being attacked unprovoked.”

“Hayley, you’re a walking target any time of day. The attacks on you are always going to be provoked.”

He finished his drink then and set the glass down on the table, dropping his legs and looking at if he were ready to stand up or say something, but something stopped him.

“And don’t worry, I was only joking about the one bed thing. You’re welcome to it, and I’ll sleep on the sofa. You don’t have to worry about me trying to jump your bones either.” His coy smile appeared again as he stood from his seat and headed towards the hallway.

“Bathroom is on the left, and bedroom on the right, I will lay out a fresh towel and a t-shirt for you to wear. Feel free to look around while I sort that out.”

How did he know I was itching to look through some of his stuff, did he have DVD’s? Books about history? Science? A secret stash of Marijuana? Or was he plain, boring, and kept things neat and tidy?
