Fists were flying, loud bangs, and shouting filled the air as well as gun fire as my bullets landed perfectly in a few bodies, and I felt the rush of adrenaline take me over. That need to kill, to destroy, was there screaming at me from within.

“Hayley!”

Darius shouted from behind, but I was too busy enjoying myself as I jumped on the back of the werewolf and wrapped my legs around his neck, using my hands as well to snap his neck, waiting to hear that sweet sound, but he gripped me and tried to throw me off. I was locked in place with my thunder thighs, as Eric calls them.

Any normal person would hate to be in this situation, even some badass guys wouldn’t want to be fighting to survive, but here I was, just like a monkey, clinging onto this guy as hard as I could as he bucked and continued to spin to get me off him.

For a moment, I lost my grip and almost slipped off, and if he had noticed, he would have been able to fling me off, but instead a knife flew through the air and landed in his chest, just barely missing my leg. Looking up, Darius was running towards me from the other end of the hallway as more werewolves piled out of the lift and towards us both.

“Shit.”

My eyes widened as I pulled the knife out from the werewolf and jammed it into the side of his neck, blood gushed out from his open wound and as he fell to the floor, I hopped off, pulled the knife out, and ran like a bat out of hell with Darius on my tail through the side stair doors.

“What the actual fuck is this?” Shouted Darius from behind as howls rang through the air.

“I’m guessing their boss has sent them out to collect me, or kill me, neither of which they will do.”

“Hay, we can hide at my place, they won’t know where that is.”

“If you didn’t already know, werewolves can track scents, and I’m pretty sure I stink.”

“My place is warded so they’d need a powerful witch to find the place first and then break in.”

Thinking for a moment as we continued down the flights of stairs back to the basement garage, I decided it might be my only option until I could regroup and let the house know what had happened. Another unexpected attack, clearly someone was trying to either get my attention, or get me out of the way.

Pushing open the side door to the garage, it was empty aside from my bike and a few resident cars but judging by the thunder that was coming down the stairs behind us, it wouldn’t be empty for too long. We needed to get out of here. It was now or never.

Darius raced in front of me and hopped on my bike, holding out his hand as I jumped on behind him, he turned the key and wheel spun out the door and onto the main road as I watched from behind nothing was following us, yet.

“How far are we going?”

“It’s just on the other side of town.”

As a loud crash happened behind us, the growls and snarls came along with them, and Darius opened the throttle to gain more speed and distance between us and our attackers and surprisingly it worked, and the werewolves dropped back until we fully lost them.

Feeling my heart slow as we crossed the bridge to the other side of the city, covering a lot of ground already, we entered the more derelict part of the city. The city itself was pretty depressing, but this side especially, as this was where most of the runaways were, the ones who weren’t able to get a job, or the drug addicts lived.

“How much longer?”

I was getting uncomfortable as I hated anyone driving my bike and as much as Darius helped me out a few times in some fights, I still didn’t know if I fully trusted him and now, I was going to be stuck with him until I could regroup and come up with a game plan.

“Keep your panties on, we’re almost there.”

I didn’t need to see the cheeky smile as he turned a corner, I knew it was there squarely on his face as he succeeded in getting me on his own.

“Oh, and by the way, I only have one bed.”

Icould have sworn he was taking me downstairs to his dungeon of pain, or maybe a red room of passion, but part of me was curious to see just how this hybrid lived. I hadn’t fully read my mother’s notes, only glanced at them and it would be interesting to read them while locked away in this place.

I was hopeful that Jackson and the others would get word about the attack on my apartment, go and investigate, and clear up the mess before they came to my aid.

As Darius pulled out a key from his pocket, he unlocked one of the scruffiest doors I had ever seen, and I was pretty sure you could have just kicked it down without the key.

“After you.”

Narrowing my eyes, a little to glare at him, as I hated any sort of chivalry, I kept one hand on my gun and stepped through the doorway and into a small corridor that opened up into a larger open space.
