“Damn.I’m sorry you got hurt.If you hadn’t stopped, I don’t know what would have happened to my son.Thank you for tryin’ to save him.I know it meant the world to him.It definitely means the world to me and my family. You don’t see people puttin’ themselves in danger to save another person a lot these days,” Demolition tells me as he reaches out and gently touches my lower leg.“Were you on your way somewhere specific? You said you were leavin’ Briar Glen.”
“Oh, um, no.I didn’t have a specific destination in mind. There’s nothing here for me so I was planning on moving somewhere new.I just lost my job at The Hide Out and was evicted because my roommate stole my money the last four months and everything I had hidden at the apartment.Where’s my car?Everything I own is inside.”
“It was towed to the club’s garage.Judge made sure it wasn’t left there on the side of the road to be towed by the county or somethin’,” one of the other men answers.“You can get it whenever you’re discharged at no cost.”
“Where do you plan on stayin’ when you’re discharged? You’ll probably need a little bit of time to finish recoverin’,” Fury asks me, taking a seat in the chair next to my bed.“Wait, did I hear you right when you said you were workin’ at The Hide Out?‘Cause you sure as fuck aren’t goin’ back to that hell. You deserve to work somewhere so much better than that place.I’ll find you a job if you need one.It might mean stayin’ in Briar Glen, but I won’t let you work somewhere like that again.”
“My car.I don’t have enough money to rent a place on my own or stay in a motel.I’ll stay in my car and slowly make my way out of town,” I say, shame filling me as I share this information with men I just met.“I can do odd jobs to make money so I can buy food and water while saving the rest for an apartment. If I have to work someplace like The Hide Out, then that’s what I’ll do.I earned money to cover the bills and that’s all I care about.”
“That’s not happenin’, Wren. You tried to save my brother and I’ll do anythin’ I can to help you.You can stay at the clubhouse to finish your recovery and then I’ll help you find somewhere else to live or move.Whatever you want,” Fury says, leaning forward so he can keep my attention on him.“I’m the Vice President of the Knight’s Rebellion MC and I’m sayin’ this is gonna happen no matter what anyone else says.We owe you more than you’ll ever realize.”
“You don’t owe me anything.I appreciate the offer, but I’m not some charity case.I’ll be fine on my own.I’ve been on my own all my life,” I say as a technician knocks and opens the door of my room.I get a glimpse of another man standing in the hallway who looks like Tristan.“Tristan?”
My voice is loud enough the guy turns and I know the second he recognizes me because he starts to smile as big as I remember.
“Wren? Is it really you?”he asks, walking in my room and stopping just behind Fury.
“It’s really me.You’re still in Briar Glen?”I return, as he moves to give me a hug that I don’t want to let go of.
So many memories slam into me as I savor the feeling of having someone around I know.
“I am.Zach is still here too. He’s back at the clubhouse right now.I know he’d love to see you.Are you okay? Why are you here?”he questions me and I can’t be any happier knowing both of my foster brothers remained together.
“I’m okay.I was brought in yesterday,” I answer, not giving him all the information.“I just have to stay here a few days and then I’ll be discharged.”
“How do you two know one another?”Fury asks when Tristan finally pulls away.
“We were in foster care together before Wren aged out.The best sister I’ve ever had.Zach knows her too.We were all in the same foster home. We’ve missed you so damn much, Wren. How have you been?”Tristan asks, sitting on the edge of my bed and making himself comfortable.
“I’ve been better.I was actually moving away from Briar Glen before I was brought in here.It was so nice to see you though,” I say, tears filling my eyes because I wish I could see Zach before leaving.
“You’re leavin’?”he questions me, pain filling his eyes as he looks at me.
“I am.There’s nothing left here for me, Tris.I’ve known it for a while. Now, things are different and I have to leave,” I answer him as the technician clears her throat to remind me she’s here.
“Are you ready to go down for your test now?”she asks, not giving away what kind of test it is.
“I am.I’m really sorry everyone, but I have more things to do so I can leave here sooner rather than later,” I say, looking at Razer’s family and Tristan.
“Tristan will be here. He’s on guard duty while you’re in the hospital. The rest of us will get out of here.I’ll be back to see you tomorrow, Wren,” Fury says, getting out of his seat and following behind the rest of the men.
“I’ll be right outside if you need anythin’ at all.I’ll call Zach and let him know you’re here.He can bring you some snacks and drinks while you’re stuck in here,” Tristan says as I’m helped in a wheelchair by the technician.
“That sounds nice,” I say as Tristan opens the door and holds it for us.
I go down and get to see my baby on the ultrasound machine. The technician does a few things on the machine as I stare at the screen and fantasize about the future with my child. When I ask if everything is okay, the technician tells me Dr.Tucker will let me know when he comes to see me.I hate waiting for test results and it seems like it’s the one thing I’m doing.Tristan is waiting for me back at my room and opens the door for me again.Once I’m back in bed, he comes in my room and lets me know Zach will be here in the morning. He’s busy at the clubhouse and can’t get away to see me.Tristan and I spend the rest of the night talking, remembering old times, and laughing as hard as we used to.It’s one of the best days I’ve had in five years. The last time I had this much fun was before I turned eighteen and had to leave Mrs.Smythe’s house.
