“Yes. He finally made his decision. We should go to his office,” she said.
Nylune hesitated. He wasn’t ready to hear what the doctor had decided. It was clear he couldn’t help him. There was no cure for him.
“Shall we?” the nurse asked patiently.
Nylune nodded. There was no use prolonging the inevitable. If there was a solution to his problem, he would have found it by now. Nylune sighed as he followed the nurse out of the room. They made their way to the other side of the centre where Dr Micha had his office. The nurse came to a stop in front of a door, knocked and stepped aside to let him walk inside.
Dr Micha sat behind his desk. Nylune could tell from the look in his eyes that it was bad. His insides tightened and he felt like crying.
“It’s bad, isn’t it?”
“Nylune, please sit down,” the doctor said, pointing him to the chair.
Nylune whimpered impatiently. He was holding on by a thread. Tears filled his eyes, so close to breaking down. “Just tell me, please.”
Dr Micha sighed. “I’ve run every test I can think of. I don’t know what’s wrong with you and I can’t figure it out. It doesn’t make any sense because you had your first heat years ago. But your body is showing all the markers of a first heat.”
“Why doesn’t it stop then? It’s been two weeks since…” Nylune swallowed. He couldn’t bring himself to talk about his moment with the alpha king. “My heats last for four days. And they’re not this intense. I feel like I’m going out of my mind. Please, help me.”
Fuck, his tears spilled over. He couldn’t hold them back anymore.
Dr Micha pushed to his feet and rounded the table. Nylune flinched as he wrapped his arms around him. He was an alpha too. His scent and his body heat did things to Nylune. He gritted his teeth, refusing to react to him. If he was going to live with this, he had to learn to control himself or he’d never go out in public again.
Dr Micha pulled back and stared at him. “I’ll keep looking for a solution. I promise you.”
Nylune nodded, though he doubted he’d find anything. What had happened to him didn’t make any sense. He’d never heard of an omega going into unexpected heat before. Nylune still couldn’t believe what he’d done. He’d never be able to face Deltta Kohle again.
Embarrassment washed over him, and he took a step away from Dr Micha before his body went crazy. He was going to have to stay away from alphas from now on. He didn’t think he could trust himself around them. He looked up to find the doctor staring at him, sympathy in his eyes.
Nylune looked away, feeling awkward and tense. It was as if he didn’t know how to be around alphas anymore. “I guess there’s no reason for me to stay here anymore,” Nylune said, breaking the tense silence in the office.
“You can stay here for as long as you want,” Dr Micha offered.
“No. I can’t. I have to go and learn how to live with this,” he said, even though he didn’t want to. He wanted to remain in the safety of the centre. But that wouldn’t be living. That wasn’t him. He wasn’t timid and he didn’t hide away from a challenge. He went for what he wanted. But this… would he be able to face this?
I will, Nylune told himself. He turned to Dr Micha. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” Nylune blinked away the tears that suddenly filled his eyes. He wasn’t going to cry again. “I think I would have gone crazy if it wasn’t for you.”
“I’ll keep searching for a cure. I promise,” Dr Micha said. “I won’t sleep until I find a way to give you a normal life.”
“Thanks,” Nylune replied. He hoped the doctor would find something, but he wasn’t going to hold his breath. The only way he was going to survive this was to accept it. To find a way to live with it.
Nylune walked out of the office and made his way to his room. What am I going to do with my life? he asked himself as he lay down on the bed.
Chapter 1
Nylune
Shit. Not again.
Nylune gritted his teeth as a wave of desire washed over him, pinching his nipples to hard, achy points. He stumbled out of bed and rushed downstairs to his office before his prolonged heat took hold. He walked to the ever-ready bottle of pills and water on his desk and popped the lid. Over the years he’d learned that a change in environment disrupted whatever was going wrong in his body and held his heat at bay, which is why he kept the pills downstairs. He was forced to move and not give into the desire raking its titillating nails down his spine.
Nylune shivered, dancing from one foot to the other as he fished one of the pills out and dropped it into his mouth. He chased it down with a sip of water. He moaned as he took deep breaths and rubbed his arms.
Dr Micha might not have found a cure for his prolonged heat, but he had formulated a pill that dulled the effects of his heat. The urge to have sex was still there, but it wasn’t as intense as it had been when he was in the centre. He could function and think – something he couldn’t do when his heat took over.
It wasn’t perfect, but he was doing well considering the torture he had gone through five years ago. Nylune shook his head, not wanting to go there. But the memories flooded his mind anyway, followed by the gut-wrenching guilt that felt worse than his prolonged heat. The whole planet was in turmoil because of what had happened between him and Deltta. He knew it wasn’t his fault, since it had been discovered that they had been poisoned with a drug given to extinct animals for reproductive purposes, but still – what they did that day changed everything. The scandal took the whole planet by storm and ruined every omega’s life. And he couldn’t take it back.
He couldn’t save them from being sent to commune houses by the authorities or change the laws the council of alphas put in place. It was devastating. For the past five years, he’d had to watch omegas being ripped from their families, having their rights taken away and being forced to live half lives.
