Sensing his disappointment, Tarymn touched his shoulder. “We’re getting close, don’t lose hope.”
“Yeah, but we still can’t prove that Pharyi is involved in this. Maybe you should take what you have to the council of alphas before he catches wind of what we’re up to. I won’t be able to live with myself if something happened to you.”
“No. We still have time,” Tarymn said. “I didn’t do this just to get the bastard. I did it to bring you back. And that’s what I’m going to do.”
They drifted back to Deltta’s house in silence. Deltta got out of the pod feeling like the bullshit would never end.
Yarr's concerned eyes landed on him as he walked through the door.
“I’m fine. Nothing happened.”
“You didn’t find the evidence you were looking for?” Yarr followed him to his office.
"No."
“I thought you ran out of here because Tarymn had something.”
“He did. It’s just not enough.” Deltta sighed, sinking into his recliner. “Pharyi covered his tracks well. It’s not going to be easy linking him to the poisoning.”
“Damn.”
“Don’t worry. Tarymn will get him somehow. He’s determined to clear my name.”
“I hope he does. You’ve lived under the shadow of what happened five years ago for a long time. It’s not right,” he said sadly.
“Stop. You’re depressing me,” Deltta bit out. He closed his eyes and leaned back into the recliner.
“Maybe this will cheer you up.” Yarr walked closer to the chair. “Here. It went off as soon as you left.”
Deltta opened his eyes and reached for his connector. He stared at it and sat up so fast the chair slid across the floor.
Mac.
His omega tried to connect with him.
Yarr laughed, walking to the door. “Goodnight, master.”
Deltta ignored him and pressed Mac’s code. It was late, but he hoped he was still awake.
“Deltta,” Mac said groggily.
“Hey,” Deltta rumbled out, his stomach tightening with want. “Did I wake you?”
“No. I was…”
“Waiting for me?” Deltta said smoothly, liking the idea of Mac waiting for him. But he would like it better if he was in his bed.
Annoyed, Mac sighed.
“Where were you anyway? I wanted to talk to you. I wanted…” he trailed off. “Never mind. I shouldn’t want…”
Deltta’s stomach squeezed tighter. Was he possessive of him too? “You shouldn’t want what, Mac?”
Mac laughed. “This is stupid. I guess sharing our heats is messing with me.”
“We’ve only been together twice. Is it getting too much for you? Do you want to stop?” No. Please say no, Deltta silently begged.
“No. I don’t want to stop,” he said softly. “But…”
