Besides, he had to talk to Deltta. The sooner he got this claiming mark business out of the way, the better. Mac pulled out his connector and stared at it.
Was he really going to do this? Tonight?
The sound of applause, laughter and Jamue’s enchanting voice drifted into the war room. Tonight, was the most important night of his life. He should be celebrating, not bringing himself down. He should be sharing this moment with someone important. Someone he never dreamt he would technically have…his alpha, even though he wasn’t his real alpha.
He could pretend he was.
He could steal this moment. Yearning so deep overwhelmed him, he gasped for breath.
Just for tonight, Mac told himself. Taking a deep breath, he pressed Deltta’s code. But he never completed the connection.
Where the hell was he? He needed him…
Chapter 17
Deltta
Deltta stared into the darkness waiting for Hym to come out of the dilapidated building that looked like it would collapse any minute.
“How the fuck does this area still exist?” he asked Tarymn. If he remembered correctly, he proposed to the council of alphas to deal with unoccupied buildings in the area, but it seemed his proposal was never approved since he was booted out.
“You were taken out, remember?” Tarymn voiced his thoughts. “And now we know why. He wanted you out of the way. And we thought embezzling public funds was bad.”
It was worse than Deltta had thought. The shit Pharyi was involved in made his skin crawl. Hym found the evidence they needed to put Pharyi away for a long time, and it wasn’t pretty. The alpha not only used the Repinuj to drug him, but he also sold it as a recreational drug. The drug brought out animalistic characteristics in those who took it, and they had orgies in the abandoned buildings around the capital.
"He's sick," Deltta bit out.
“You can say that again,” Tarymn said bitterly. “According to Hym, this is big business. People are looking for that high and paying big credit for the experience. The beta we followed here is Pharyi’s supplier, but Hym couldn’t find out if he’s the main supplier. There could be more. But for now, I think we should focus on you. Once we nail Pharyi, we can find out how far this thing goes.”
“Do you think the beta is the one who poisoned Nylune and me?”
“I hope so,” Tarymn said. He pointed to a spot in the darkness. “Hym should be coming out soon.”
Deltta watched the building, and to his surprise, Tarymn’s twin came walking towards them, dragging the beta. Tarymn opened the door for them.
Throwing the beta inside, Hym grunted. “Let’s go.”
Tarymn drifted down the airway, throwing his brother a few concerned glances. Hym didn’t look injured.
“He’s fine,” Deltta said, facing the beta.
He recoiled, slamming into Hym in his effort to get away.
“Really?” the alpha growled out, shoving him off him.
Deltta leaned closer, a snarl ripping out of him. “I see you recognize me. Do you have something to tell me?”
The beta shook his head, folding his arms over his chest.
“We’ll see about that,” Deltta growled. The beta lifted his chin and kept quiet. “Pharyi won't protect you. He’s going to pin everything on you.”
“You have nothing,” the beta said.
Hym laughed. “That’s what you think. We have evidence that you stole the Repinuj from the animal sanctuary and that you’re running a drug operation right under the council’s nose. That’s enough to put you away for life. But if you tell us about your involvement with Pharyi maybe we can try to convince the council of alphas to be lenient with you.”
The beta’s lips thinned into a hard line. He wasn't going to talk.
Deltta sighed.
