Rami smiled a little. “I know that, but you live and work in the same place, so it makes sense that you’ll form relationships there. Benjamin says you spend a lot of time with Sid? I haven’t spoken with him yet, but I will soon. What’s he like?”

“Why do you need to talk to Sid?”

“Why not?”

Aggression flared in Dante’s veins. He fought the urge to ball his fists, knowing Rami would see it. “Because he has nothing to do with this. I just help him out, that’s all.”

“He’s your supervisor.”

“He’s—” But technically Rami was right. Dante didn’t see Benjamin from one day to the next, and most days, Sid was the only person he so much as glanced at, much less spoke to. “Whatever. Don’t make him come here, though, or fill in forms or speak on the phone. He has MS, so that shit is hard for him.”

“I can visit him.” Rami made a note on the pad in front of him. “Perhaps Benjamin can arrange it for me. But I’d like you to tell me a little more about your working relationship with him. It’s helpful to hear it from your point of view.”

“My point of view?”

“You don’t think I take what other people say about you as gospel, do you? Dante, you have a voice.”

“What do you want me to say?”

“Whatever you like. I’m just asking you to give me an idea of how life is for you right now. Tell me about your typical day. What do you do? What do you like? Or dislike?”

Dante blew out a breath. “That’s a lot of questions.”

“You don’t have to answer them all, just give me something. What time do you get up?”

“Half six.”

“Then what?”

“I meet Sid at the barn for breakfast.”

“You eat together?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s nice.”

“Is it?”

Rami smiled again. “You tell me.”

“It’s nice,” Dante said. “And it’s better than prison food.”

“I’ll bet. What happens next?”

“We work.”

Rami waved his hand for Dante to elaborate.

“In the gardens,” Dante clarified. “Or the polytunnels or the greenhouses. Whatever needs doing.”

“Do you stay with Sid all day?”

“Sometimes. Depends where he needs me.”

“Benjamin said you’ve been a great help to Sid with his disability. He told me Sid never lets anyone help him the way he lets you. Why do you think that is?”

Dante studied Rami, spearing him with a stare that would’ve made other men blink. Men who weren’t spearing Dante right back. “I think he lets me help him for my benefit. So I feel useful.”
