As the last sliver of sun disappears below the horizon, I think about how much we've grown together. Once lost souls, now intertwined in a complex web of passion, trust, and understanding. We started out as individuals, but now we're all part of something so much greater.
A gentle breeze rustles through the trees, carrying the scent of the sea. I close my eyes, breathing it in. No matter how chaotic things get, this place centers me.
Beside me, Aria sighs contentedly. We don't need to speak—our shared experience connects us on a deeper level. In this moment, I feel profoundly grateful to have her wisdom and empathy to guide me.
Stars begin to peek through the dark blanket of night. Each one a pinprick of light, even against the blackness. Just like the hope we give each other, illuminating our lives when things seem darkest.
I reach for Aria's hand, squeezing gently. She looks at me, her eyes glistening, and smiles.
I’ve found a new sister in her, a close friend. And together we’ll embrace our darkness and find our inner light.
Chapter forty-three
The Next Day
My mind has been racing with thoughts of taking Tane down. It's bubbling up unpleasant memories—my father's debt, my kidnapping, his ultimate demise. But those things had their upsides, too. Like meeting my guys. And, as it turns out, in the midst of this chaos we have a little time to spend together. So I've planned a special surprise for them, something I've been wanting to do for a while.
All I told them was to bring decent walking shoes, and the rest will take care of itself.
"Please tell us where we're going," Zeke had said, frowning. "You know how I feel about surprises."
"I promise this is a risk-free adventure," I laugh. "Be a bit spontaneous, please. The worst you're going to do is get a mosquito bite, or maybe trip over something if you're not careful where you're going."
"If you say so," he sighs. "Good thing I trust you."
Rake, on the other hand, is a bundle of excitement, jumping from one foot to another. Grinning at me. He's childlike in his enthusiasm, but it somehow translates into sexiness in this handsome, tattooed giant of a man.
Dom and Skyler are more go with the flow with the plan, and they hop into the vehicle, both wearing sneakers as instructed. We drive for a while, curving our way along winding roads lined with lush palm trees and other vegetation. There's not a ton of traffic, but I really don't mind being stuck in a row of cars in a place like this. As long as I'm with these incredible men.
We make our way down the winding path, the thick canopy of leaves overhead filtering the golden sunlight into dappled patterns. The distant roar of water grows louder with each step, anticipation building within me.
The leaf canopy parts before us, revealing a hidden paradise tucked away in the heart of the forest. My breath catches in my throat at the sight that unfolds before our eyes. I’d seen it in Instagram pictures before, but nothing could have prepared me quite for what this looks like in person.
We emerge into a sun-drenched clearing where a towering waterfall cascades into a crystal-clear pool, rainbow-hued mist swirling at its base. Mist rises from the base of the falls, rainbows dancing across its surface.
The air is alive with the roar of rushing water and the sweet scent of tropical flowers: plumeria, lobster-claws, birds of paradise, Kahili ginger, each scent more enticing than the next. Sunlight filters through the treetops above in dappled patterns, dancing across the surface of the rippling waters.
I glance over my shoulder to find four pairs of eyes gazing at me in wonder, their expressions a mixture of astonishment and delight. I’ve never seen the four of them speechless at the sight of something new. A surge of pride washes over me at the joy I've brought to my men.
"Surprise!" I announce with a mischievous grin.
"Holy shit, Dev. This place is incredible!" Zeke breathes, his analytical mind momentarily silenced by the magnificence of the natural world.
"It's like something out of a dream," Dom adds, his voice tinged with awe.
Rake lets out his trademark low whistle, his gaze lingering on me with unveiled admiration. "You never cease to amaze us, Dev."
Warmth floods my cheeks at his praise. I may have led them to this hidden paradise, but they’re the ones who bring color to my world.
My lips curve into a smile as I meet Skyler's gaze, his eyes glinting with wonder as he takes in the spectacle before us. I knew that he, out of all four of them, would likely appreciate this the most.
"Wow, Dev. This place is amazing." Genuine admiration fills his voice, igniting a surge of warmth in my chest.
"The water's perfect too," I say, kicking off my sneakers and socks.
I dash forward with a laugh, plunging into the crystal clear pool. The guys' surprised shouts and curses echo behind me as they scramble to catch up, their playful threats of punishment bringing a grin to my lips.
The cool water envelops me, its refreshing embrace chasing away the lingering heat. I surface with a gasp, pushing back my tangled hair as I find myself gazing up at four grinning faces.
