He was gorgeous, of course, but there was nothing – he didn’t feel the tug deep inside. And he was the third omega he’d seen so far.

Tarymn stared at him, waiting.

Hym shook his head.

He heard Tarymn talk to the agency representative. The office door opened, and he was left alone.

Hym sighed, frustrated.

It was not working.

The door opened again, and Tarymn walked back in.

“How many are left?”

“Two. They should be here soon.” Tarymn came to stand next to him. “I doubt the agency will send us more. So…”

“I’ll take the one that arrives first,” Hym declared. There was no use looking for something he couldn’t find. “You can send the other one back.”

“Are you sure about that? You can’t just choose anyone. You must like them for it to work.”

“I won’t like anyone, it’s clear. There was nothing wrong with the three omegas we interviewed. I just…” Hym sighed.

He walked to the couch and sat down. His large body sank into the comfortable cushions, and he felt like closing his eyes.

He’d barely slept the past few days – his dreams returning with a vengeance.

Work would be a fucking good distraction right about now.

But they had nothing.

Tarymn had nothing too. The investigation had stalled. Or maybe the council of alphas was focused on other things. The alpha king’s second inauguration was coming soon – preparations were underway.

He should be out there searching for leads before the trail grew cold. Hym rubbed his eyes. He looked up to find Tarymn staring at him.

“Don’t worry, brother. I’ll make it work somehow. I don’t have to like the omega for him to be my companion. He just needs to be here, right?” he asked.

Tarymn’s face fell.

That was a no.

Hym turned away just as the door opened. Pitra bowed and addressed his master.

“The next omega has arrived, master. May I show him in?”

“Yes,” Tarymn said.

Hym sat up straighter and smoothed his hands over his long shirt.

“There’s no need to go through a long interview. I’m taking this one,” he said as the omega walked in.

Hym shoved to his feet at the sight of the omega. His lungs tightened.

He was here.

Why was he here?

Hym turned to Tarymn.
