“Sharing our heat is different from being bonded to each other, Deltta.”
“But I already claimed you.”
“That was an accident. It doesn’t count. And besides, no one has to know about this.” Mac cast his eyes at his feet. “It never happened.”
Deltta stared at him, devastated. “It never happened. Are you listening to yourself? Is that why you wanted to break our bond?”
“Yes, I tried to make things easy for you, but you refused. You’re making this harder than it should be. I don’t want you to bond with me because you claimed me by mistake. I…” Mac blinked rapidly, looking away from him.
He wasn’t going to listen to him no matter what he said.
“What’s going to happen now?” Deltta asked. “Are we done?”
Mac shrugged. “It’s up to you. I don’t mind continuing with our arrangement until you find a suitable omega.”
Deltta wanted to grasp his arms and shake him. There was no one out there for him…he was the one. But he knew he wouldn’t listen.
Deltta turned and walked out of the room.
“Oh sorry.” Jamue jumped out of the way guiltily. He’d been listening to their conversation.
Deltta felt mortified. He’d never been rejected by an omega so blatantly.
“Good night,” he said, walking out. Yarr stared at him as he made his way to the hover pod. He opened the door for him. Deltta jumped inside.
“I guess it didn’t go well,” Yarr said from the operator seat.
“Let’s head home. I don’t want to be here anymore.” Deltta groaned out. He was acting childish, but damn, his heart ached, and his pride was bruised.
Yarr turned in his seat and stared at him. “What did he say?”
Fuck. Did he have to talk about this? It was over.
Yarr stared at him, waiting.
Deltta sighed.
“Maybe you can make sense of this mess. Any omega would have been happy to bond with me, but…”
“But he’s not like other omegas.” Yarr interrupted him.
“Not you too.” Deltta snapped. “I’m tired of hearing that shit. Shut up if you have nothing better to say.”
“I don’t mean his appearance. I mean the kind of life he’s lived. Look around Deltta. He lives alone with another omega. He’s not in some commune house. He’s taking care of himself and another omega. How do you think he got here? He had to work in a leisure room to live here. And I’m sure that wasn’t an easy decision. What omega do you know would give up being taken care of by some alpha or beta? None. His life has been different because of his appearance.” Yarr stared up at the building. “I was worried when I picked him up the first time I brought him to you. He’s nothing like the omegas you were with before.”
“I’m not the same alpha either,” Deltta said.
“I know. By some miracle, you matched each other. I was grateful for that.” Yarr returned his gaze to him. “You need to step back and see things from his perspective. He’s lived a different life. I bet he never thought he would meet an alpha who would want to be with him, let alone bond with him. And you are not just any alpha, Deltta. You are the alpha king. Think about what this will mean for him.”
“I don’t care about that.”
“You might not care, but a lot of people will care. And it seems Mac cares too.” Yarr sighed. “You might have to let him go.”
“I don’t think I can.” Deltta bit out. There was no way he would let him go.
“Deltta, he rejected you.”
“Not entirely. He still wants to continue with our arrangement. That means there’s still hope,” Deltta said softly to himself. But Yarr heard him all the same. The beta gave him a sympathetic look. “Don’t look at me like that.”
