“Poison?”

“Yes, what happened to you was unnatural. You worked with Nylune for a long time and you were never drawn to him. Even when his heat was approaching, you never reacted. You treated him like any other omega, but what was different that day?”

Deltta shook his head. He couldn’t believe this.

“It’s hard to believe. I know. I didn’t think about it until Hym brought it up.” Tarymn glanced at his twin.

“Is there a poison that can even do that?”

“Yes.”

“Can you prove he poisoned me?” Deltta asked, clenching the device. He should have known he didn’t go crazy that night. Pharyi, that spineless sonofabitch. He wanted him to pay for this. He put him through hell because he wanted to hide his treacherous ways.

“Hym is working on it,” Tarymn said. Deltta turned to the blue twin.

“But he’s not in the council of alphas.”

“He can go where I can’t.” Tarymn shrugged. Deltta knew what he meant. Hym worked for a secret organisation that dealt with issues the council of alphas wouldn’t touch. Their means were not always legal, but they got the job done. In retrospect, Deltta regretted not handing Pharyi over to them.

Deltta wondered why Tarymn hadn’t gone to them. He probably had his reasons. Tarymn took the data reader from him and removed the chip.

“If you have this evidence, why haven’t you gone to Maxus? He can deal with Pharyi better than I can.”

“I know. But this doesn’t prove that he plotted against you. That’s what I want to prove. I want to clear your name and put him away for a very long time,” Tarymn said with feeling. Deltta felt guilty for doubting his friend.

He cleared his throat and moved to the couch.

“You really did this for me?” he asked.

“Yes, we’re friends. Or have you forgotten that too?”

“For a while there... it felt like I didn’t have any friends. I haven’t seen you in a long time.”

“I know. But I couldn’t let on that I was looking into Pharyi. If he managed to take you out, there’s no telling what he would have done if he knew I was continuing with the investigation.”

“I understand.”

Tarymn had two stepbrothers; they needed him. He couldn’t risk it all for him.

But it would seem he did, discretely.

“When can you find the proof that he poisoned me?” Deltta asked. Anger swirled inside him; thinking about the motherfucker pissed him off. His scent filled the room, overwhelming the other alphas.

Tarymn cleared his throat.

Deltta rubbed his face. “Sorry.”

He was growing tense again. He thought of Mac, and his body tightened for a different reason. Fuck. He needed to stop thinking about him. The omega was only available to him for his heats. He couldn’t have him whenever the mood struck.

“That’s going to take time. And I'm afraid the poison might have been undetectable, or you would have scented it in the air. With so much time gone by...” Tarymn trailed off.

Shit, they might not find anything.

“I don't think the poison is important here, but how he poisoned you.” Hym said. Deltta turned to him, wondering what he was getting at.

Hym got to his feet and stood next to his brother. “I believe he poisoned you before you reached your office. Maybe if we focus on that, we might find something. Did you and your assistant go somewhere that day or that week?”

Tarymn sighed. "That won't work. He doesn't remember anything from that time."
