Deltta came to a stop a few paces from the room.

“What?” Mac asked. His long hair covered one side of his face. Deltta itched to touch it again, but he stopped himself.

“I... we didn’t talk about contraception. I’m sorry. I should have thought of it. If something happens...” he began but Mac shook his head. He showed him the inside of his left arm; a tiny black mark dotted his skin.

“Don’t worry about it. Nothing is going to happen,” he said with a smile. “I should get going if I want to return to work tomorrow evening.”

Stunned, Deltta nodded.

He stared at Mac’s arm feeling weird.

Mac walked to the front door, where Yarr and the others were waiting for him.

“Be safe and connect with mom. She’s worried about you,” Griean told his brother as they hugged each other again.

“I will,” Mac said. He glanced at him and then got into the hover pod. Deltta watched it drift away. He turned and made his way back to his office.

“What was that about?” Maxus asked.

“What?” Deltta walked to the table and poured himself another drink.

“Don’t act dumb. You dragged Mac out of here as if the room was on fire. Is everything okay?” Maxus took his drink away from him.

Deltta gave him a look and sighed. He walked to his lounge chair and sat down.

“Everything is fine. I was concerned about getting him pregnant. I didn’t even think about it when I was balls deep inside him.”

“So, it’s not a concern?” Maxus asked.

“No. He has a contraceptive chip,” Deltta bit out. He should be happy about that, but he wasn’t.

Maxus stared at him.

“That’s good, right? You don’t have to worry about having an unplanned cub,” Maxus said. “Speaking of unplanned things, Tarymn dropped by yesterday and asked to see you.”

“He did?”

That was strange. Tarymn like the other alphas in the council, kept his distance after he was stripped of his alpha king title, even though Deltta considered him a friend. “What did he want?”

“He didn’t say. He asked specifically for you. He left as soon as I told him you were unavailable. Is something going on?” Maxus asked suspiciously.

Deltta had no idea why Tarymn wanted to see him. When he was the alpha king, Tarymn handled security intelligence for him. Deltta wasn’t sure if he was still in that position. Maxus might have changed a lot of things after his removal. Deltta clenched his jaw, hating that Tarymn showed up at the house. He’d kept his distance for five years.

Why come back now?

He got to his feet and poured himself another drink. The Red Amber didn’t taste as it should. He should have asked Mac to mix some spirits for him before he left.

“Deltta?”

“How the fuck should I know? Tarymn is part of your council of alphas. If you haven’t noticed, I’m no longer the alpha king. You are,” Deltta said bitterly.

“Don’t say that. You know I don’t want to be the alpha king. That was never my dream. It was yours,” Maxus said. “But shit happened. And here we are.”

Fuck. Deltta sighed. He turned to his brother; he looked hurt.

“Sorry.”

Deltta returned to his recliner. He wished he was still in his room with Mac. The omega made him forget how draining his life was. Maxus sat on the couch. They were silent for a while. “What do you think he wanted?” Deltta asked.
