If anything, it reaffirmed that we hadn’t had sex because I would have known if we had. Despite my throbbing headacheand light sensitivity, my body wasn’t sore or anything that would have led to me thinking we had sex.
“Alright.” Drix sauntered back in, still shirtless and pantless. “I think these might fit.” He lifted a pair of shorts.
He also had socks and an unopened toothbrush in hand.
I looked at the shorts in his hand. I’d expected a pair of shorts too small for him. Instead he had a pair of women’s athletic shorts.
“Am I going to have to beat another one of your hoes over these?” I asked seriously.
“Unless you calling my sister a hoe, nah.”
“Good.” I snatched the shorts and socks from him. Then I spun around and headed for the primary bathroom.
“You’re welcome.”
“Thank you,” I said right before I slammed the door.
I took a quick, hot shower, took care of my hygiene needs, including snatching Drix’s lotion to moisturize, and pulled on the athletic shorts and one of Drix’s shirts. I tied it in a knot so it didn’t swallow me whole and turned both ways in the mirror, making sure I somewhat liked how it looked before I let myself out.
Drix’s house was nice and I had a burning desire to look around but didn’t. Instead I walked straight to the staircase and went downstairs.
I found Drix on a call in the kitchen in a T-shirt and athletic shorts, a pair of slides on his feet.
“We’ll be on our way in five minutes. See y’all in thirty.” He didn’t wait for a response. He just hung up. “You need anything before we head out?”
“Nope.”
“Bet. Let’s head out then. My sister got with Allison and they want to meet with us and your group at Allison’s office. “
“Okay. Let’s do it.”
“Here.” Drix dug into his pocket and pulled out a pair of shades.
I looked from the shades to his face before I took them.
“Thanks.”
“Yeah. If the light is hitting me like this, I can’t imagine how the sun is gon’ treat our asses.”
I groaned but put on the shades Drix had offered me.
He walked over to a wall of three different keys, plucked one up, and gestured for me to follow him.
He’d been right about the sun. I got dizzy as soon as I was outside.
We were halfway through our drive when I glanced at Drix. He had his shades on and drove with one hand, the other beneath his chin like he was pondering as he drove.
“Can we stop at Brewed Bean?” I asked, referencing a nearby coffeeshop.
“Didn’t I ask before we left if you wanted anything?”
“Drix.” I did my best to glare at him from behind the shades. “After the night we had and the day we’re bound to have, get my fucking chai.”
“Yo’ lil ass allergic to please or what?” He looked at me. “I’m letting you get away with a lot of shit because you were essentially drugged last night, but make this the last mothafuckin’ time you call yourself chesting up to a nigga when he ain’t been trying to do shit but make sure you good.”
I met his gaze and he glared me down in a way that had me shifting in my seat and turning to look out of the window. He was right. Despite how rude he’d been in passing to other people, he hadn’t been rude to me. He hadn’t insulted me or called me out of my name and had offered me his clothes and a shower, both of which he didn’t have to.
“I’m sorry,” I said after a moment. “My head is just throbbing and I’m overwhelmed with how bad I know shit is with the fightand the marriage both coming to light back to back like this.” I sank in his seat and crossed my arms over my chest. “This could be the end of my career before it even got started.”
