“So was I,” Jason admitted in the privacy of his room.
“You?” She looked up at him. “I didn’t think anything scared you.”
“There’s one thing.” He swallowed a huge knot that had suddenly formed in his throat. “One thing that absolutely terrifies me.”
“What’s that?”
“Losing you.”
“Jason.” More tears formed. “You won’t.”
“I want a life with you, Sophie,” he stated boldly. “All that stuff we talked about before? I want that, but only if I can have it with you.”
“I want that, too.” She wiped her cheeks dry. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
“Good. Now that we got that settled, what do you say we fly to Vegas as soon as I’m sprung from this place?”
“Vegas?” Her dark brows pulled together. “You want us to take a vacation?”
“I want us to get married.”
It took a full two seconds for his words to sink in. “What?”
“I know it’s fast, but we also know what we want and who we want it with. Why waste more time when you and I both know where this is headed?”
A slow smile spread across her gorgeous face. “I like your logic, Agent Ryker.”
“Is that a yes?”
“Yes.” Sophie nodded, her cheeks becoming damp once more. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”
Pain forgotten, Jason guided her lips to his. “I like your answer, Dr. Ruiz.”
“Good.” She kissed him again. “Although, what would you think if I changed my title to Dr. Ryker?”
Jason’s heart swelled, the machines around them beeping a bit faster. “I think that sounds fucking perfect.”
