Chapter 9

––––––––

Sophie walked intoher home. Except it didn’t really feel like a home, anymore.

It was the place she’d been attacked. Violated by an unknown man who’d broken in and gone through her things.

“You okay?” Jason asked from his place beside her.

He’d asked her that same thing when he’d been inside her less than two hours ago.

She still couldn’t believe they’d had sex. No, not just sex. They’d made love.

This strong, stoic, handsome man had shown her pleasure in ways she’d never imagined she could feel.

When he’d told her about his fiancée and unborn child, her heart had shattered for him. As a doctor, she’d delivered news of a loved one’s death numerous times. It was the hardest part of her job.

But to have your loved one die in your arms, that was a pain Sophie prayed she never had to feel.

“Soph?”

She blinked, realizing she hadn’t responded to his question. “I’m good.” She nodded. “Just ready to get this over with.”

“Come on.” He placed his hand on her lower back and guided her up the stairs. “We’ll get you packed and then you can walk through each room and see if you notice anything out of place.”

There was an officer stationed on the road in front of the house. Jason had spoken with him when they’d first arrived.

She hadn’t listened too closely to the conversation but heard enough to realize he was there at Jason’s request.

The man sure has some pull in this city.

For the next few minutes, Sophie went about packing some clothes, shoes, and toiletries into her larger suitcase. As she did, she looked around her room to see what, if anything, had been moved or altered.

The only place that appeared disturbed was her closet. It was a total mess.

Something she hadn’t noticed during the break-in, because she’d been too busy fighting for her life and then getting knocked out.

Clothes were strewn about. Her suitcases had all been opened and tossed to the side.
