Chapter 8

––––––––

Jason took Sophie’shand and led her back upstairs, to his bedroom. His heart pounded against his ribs so hard, he was almost afraid the damn thing was going to burst free.

He didn’t know what had compelled him to tell her about Shelby and the baby. He never talked about them with anyone.

But this was Sophie. She brought things out in him he’d buried ten years ago, alongside his fiancée and child.

It was crazy and made absolutely no sense. Sure, they’d known each other for years, but they didn’tknoweach other. Not like this.

That didn’t matter.

Things were moving fast between them. He knew that. Yet at the same time, it felt as if it had taken forever for them to get here.

Now that they finallywerehere, Jason’s hesitation and worry were suddenly all but gone.

Maybe telling her about his loss all those years ago had somehow set him free. Maybe by giving Sophie that piece of himself, he was finally able to fight for something other than justice for victims and vengeance against the bad guys.

He could finally reach out and take what he’d wanted all along. What he knew in his jaded heart was his.

I want her. Heart and soul, I want her.

Making his way to the bed, Jason stopped several inches away and turned to her. “Are you sure about this? If not, we can—"

She put a finger to his lips, cutting off his words. “I’m sure.”

Thank Christ.

Relief flooded him as he let the tip of his tongue slide along the digit. Sophie’s breasts rose with her sharp intake of air, her pupils expanding with the same desperate heat filling every inch of his body.

Wrapping his fingers around her tiny wrist, Jason pressed his lips against her palm. The inside of her wrist. The sensitive skin just below the inside of her elbow.

Pulling her close, he wrapped her arm around his waist as he reached up and cupped her cheek. “I’ve wanted you for so long,” he admitted in the quiet of his room. “It’s been killing me not to be able to hold you like this.”

“I’ve wanted you, too,” she smiled up at him. “From the day we met, I’ve dreamed of being with you like this.”
