“Here.” He popped open the prescription and tapped two pills out into his palm. “Take these.”

“I don’t know that I need—”

“You’re hurting.” He handed her the water. “And you need to rest. These can help with both of those things.” When she hesitated, he lifted a brow and asked, “What would you tell your patients?”

“You play dirty.” Sophie swallowed the pills and downed a big gulp of water. Setting the bottle onto the nightstand she licked her damp lips.

I’d sure as hell like to play dirty with you, Doc.

“Thank you.”

He gave himself a mental head slap. “You’re welcome.”

Settling her head back down onto the pillow, she pulled the covers up to her chin and sighed.

“Better?”

“Better.” She nodded, her hair making a swishing sound as it brushed back and forth on his pillow.

More than anything, Jason wanted to go to her. His body itched to lay down next to her and hold her in his arms. To give her the comfort he knew she needed in order to find a peaceful sleep.

For years, he’d avoided relationships in order to keep from feeling the pain. Standing here now, seeing this amazing woman in his bed, he realized he’d do anything to take her pain and make it his own.

Picking up his gun, he turned to leave when he heard Sophie’s soft voice beckon him.

“Jason?”

He faced her once more. “Yeah?”

“Would you mind staying? Just until I fall asleep?”

She’s scared.

This strong, fiercely independent woman who’d travelled halfway around the world to help others was scared to be alone.

Jason was filled with a sudden jolt of urgency to find the son of a bitch who’d caused that fear and make them wish they’d never been born.

“Never mind.” Sophie blurted, her voice bringing him back from his murderous thoughts. “Forget I said anythi—”

“I’ll stay.”

Without a word, Jason set his gun back onto the small table and climbed into his bed. Adjusting the covers so they were over them both, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her back to his front.

He nearly groaned when he felt her smooth, bare legs brushing up against his. Wondering what the hell he’d been thinking, he prayed she couldn’t feel the growing erection that had a mind all of its own.

Jason closed his eyes and breathed in her sweet scent. His body molded around hers perfectly, as if they were tailor-made for one another.

“This okay?” His voice rumbled as he worked to slow his racing heart.

“Yeah.”

Her hand slid over his, which was resting snuggly against her flat belly. She already sounded more relaxed, the tension in her muscles easing as he held her close.

“Thank you,” she whispered again so softly he barely heard it.

Jason threaded his fingers with hers as he dropped a kiss on the back of her head. “Go to sleep, sweetheart. You’re safe here.”

Within minutes Sophie was sound asleep. But for Jason, sleep didn’t come until much, muchlater.
