“Jason.” He took her hand in his, using the innocent opportunity to touch her once again. “You can call me Jason.”
You can call me Jason? Seriously? Why not just go ahead and tell her you want to strip her down and drive yourself balls deep into her delectable body?
Giving himself a mental smack, he somehow managed to keep his demeanor professional. Thankfully, if the gorgeous doctor suspected his wildly inappropriate thoughts, she didn’t let on.
With a final goodbye, Jason stood at his doorway, watching the impressive woman walk away. Feeling as though he’d just made the biggest mistake of his life, he went to Betty’s office and instructed her to get the paperwork rolling.
“Told you,” she said with a smartass grin.
Responding with nothing more than a low grunt, he returned to his office and shut the door. Once inside, he drew in his first real breath since meeting Sophie.
His reaction to her was ridiculous. He’d known attractive women before. Even slept with them, on occasion. So why the hell he felt like his world had just turned on its axis was beyond his comprehension.
She’s a gorgeous, professional woman, and Homeland is lucky to have her.
The voice in his head was right. Jason knew his decision to hire Dr. Ruiz was based solely on her credentials and experience, and nothing more. He’d just have to make damn sure he stayed as far away from her as he could.
Otherwise, he was bound to do something stupid like pull her in his arms and kiss her.
Chapter 1
––––––––
Present Day Djibouti, Africa...
Another explosion lit the early morning sky. Dr. Sophia Ruiz couldn’t tell where it had originated from, but she did know it was far too close for comfort.
From her place near the window, she looked back at her patient. Relieved the man’s medically induced coma kept him unaware of the violence surrounding them.
“I can’t believe this is happening.” Christine, one of the nurses who’d travelled to Djibouti with the same volunteer group as Sophie stood in the corner farthest from the window.
In her forties, the Wisconsin native was sweet but tough. Of course, even the strongest person would be scared under these circumstances.
Hell, I’m terrified.
“I know.” Sophie crossed her arms in front of her and nodded. “But we’ll be okay. The hospital chief came in while you were in the restroom. He said someone from Camp Lemonnier called. They’re sending a Naval unit to come get us.”
