She rolled her eyes and tilted her head toward the ceiling, exhaling heavily. “They’re not gonna kill us.”

“Yes they are!” Sean screamed and made all four legs of the chair come off the ground when he tried to stomp his feet. “Do you see the blood on my face? Does it look like they’re joking around?”

Mitzie stared at him with an unreadable expression while he took a moment to catch his breath.

“You need to start talking,” he seethed.

Mitzie shook her head and made a show of clamping her mouth shut.

“If I’d gotten the kid, we couldn’t have gone back to the house, and we couldn’t ride around in the car, so where were we going?”

“I got nothing to say.”

“Of course you don’t,” Sean said with disdain. “Let me lay this out for you. The bikers know your daughter wasn’t involved, and they know you were meeting someone. They’re gonna find out who that was one way or another.”

“I don’t care what they think they know.”

“I want to know! What were you supposed to do with the kid?”

“I don’t know. Whatever I was told to once the ransom was paid.”

“What about before you got the money? What were you going to do with her until then?”

Mitzie narrowed her eyes. “Why the hell do you care? All you had to do was get her, and you fucked that up!”

“Because I don’t want to fucking die! Stop being a cunt for five seconds so we can get out of this mess.”

“Whatever.”

“If you tell them where you were taking the kid, they said they’d let us go.”

Mitzie’s eyes widened and she tried to lean forward, giving Sean her full attention. However, the restraints securing her to the chair prevented her from doing so. She looked down at the rope around her waist for several seconds before she cut her eyes back to Sean, seeming to consider her options. “They said that?”

Sean nodded eagerly. “Yes!”

She laughed. “You’re dumber than I thought if you believe them.”

“Really? You’re not going to at least try to save our asses?”

“No, I’m not. If they were going to kill us, they would’ve done it by now,” Mitzie said confidently. “They’re just trying to see what they can get out of us before they hand us over to the cops. They did the same thing with my son and stepson.”

“You’d rather go to jail than walk away free?”

Mitzie smirked. “Why would I go to jail? I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“You were driving the getaway car.”

“As I recall, I came to pick you up from the mall and someone was chasing you across the parking lot. You jumped in the car, and I drove away. I didn’t know you were running from a botched crime.”

“Botched crime?” Sean shouted. “It wasn’t supposed to be a crime. You said your daughter was in on it.”

“I don’t recall saying anything like that.”

“Oh, so this is all just one big coincidence? You really think anyone’s going to believe that?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I thought you were being chased by some crazed holiday shopper. I had no idea what was going on.”

“The fuck you didn’t. You’re the only one who does know what’s going on.”
