Her phone flashed with a call from Luciano. “We good?”

“I’ll be in touch.” Z hung up.

She put Luciano’s call on speaker. “Hey, are you coming over?”

“Later today,” Luciano replied. “How is she?”

“Amazing. She hasn’t shed a single tear.”

“She’s a Santini.” Slash could hear the pride in Luciano’s voice. After a pause, he said, “I found Elwood Tosh.”

A strange mix of emotions washed over her. Fear morphed into anger… then hatred. And finally, courage.

“Do you want him?” Luciano asked snapping her back to the present.

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Staying with Elsa at Carrera’s.” His deep chuckle made her smile. “What?” she asked.

“When are you going to admit you’re in love with him?”

“I did this morning.”

“Finally,” Luciano replied. “I’ll tell you about Tosh when I see you. Youcannotdo this hit alone. Understood?”

“Got it.”

“See you later.”

“Luciano, thank you.” She hung up and turned around.

Carrera and Elsa were standing there, their mouths agape.

Oh, boy.

“The arson detective is here,” Carrera said. “He wants to talk to you.”

“How much of that did you hear?” Slash asked them.

“Enough,” Carrera said.

Elsa walked over to the white board, crossed her arms, and started reading their notes. Then, she turned toward them. “Your house is far more exciting than mine.”

“Not a word, G-ma,” Carrera said as he ushered them out, pulling the door closed behind him.

“Not a word,” Elsa promised as they went into the kitchen.

The detective was head-down on his phone typing out a text. When finished, he said hello to Slash.

“You saved Mrs. Santini’s life, but I have to lecture you aboutnotrunning into a burning building.”

A smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “Save it, Detective. I would do it all over again, even with the lecture.”

“Mrs. Santini, you have a doorbell camera,” the detective said to Elsa. “Can I get videos from last night?”

“I’ll send them over, but there’s nothing,” Carrera said. “Whoever started the fire steered clear of her front door.”
