When finished, they shouldered their go-bags and left.

In the parking lot, Hawk said, “You following me?”

“You sure you want a third wheel?” Rebel pushed back.

“You’re not backing out. That case can wait a few hours. Plus, Prescott and Jacqueline might swing by. Their son, Ethan, is having a sleepover at Dakota and Providence’s.”

Rebel stopped at his sports car, dropped his bag in the trunk. “They’re kid-free. There’snoway they’re comin’ over.”

“They might need an intermission,” Hawk said, and the guys laughed.

Thirty minutes later, Rebel parked curbside at Hawk’s townhome, then walked into the garage.

“Hello Nicholas,” said the computer. “Good to see you Joaquin.”

“Damn computers are takin’ over the world,” Rebel muttered.

Hawk entered his home. Rebel followed.

“Computer, is Addison at home?” Hawk asked.

“Checking.” A moment later, the computer said, “She and Britain exited the premises thirty-eight minutes ago.”

A hit of adrenaline powered through Rebel.

“They must’ve gone for a run,” Hawk said as they walked into the kitchen.

“Brit’s here?” Rebel asked.

“Yeah, she’s visiting for the weekend. You guys met at?—”

“Thanksgiving,” Rebel replied.

Hawk opened the fridge, pulled out two bottles. “Beer?”

Rebel took it from him, twisted the top, then eased onto a counter stool.

“Congrats on the new job.” Hawk tapped his bottle against Rebel’s before the men swigged down the stout. “I’m pretty pumped to be working with you.”

Hawk tapped a music app on his phone and the earthy tunes of Welshly Arms floated through the first floor.

“Same.” Rebel took another swig, but his thoughts were too-focused on Brit.

While he was thrilled she was back in town, he didn’t like that she hadn’t let him know.

“Guess she’s not interested,” Rebel muttered to himself.

“Saywhat?”

“If I tell you something, what’s the chance you tell your wife?”

Hawk smiled. “If it’s about hooking up with Brit, I already know. She told Addison?—”

“So, a hundred percent,” Rebel said.

“We don’t keep secrets. Do you remember Gil from—what division of the Bureau was he with?”

“I know who you’re talkin’ about. Wasn’t he that blowhard?”
