Jordan stuffed his hands into his coat pockets. “I don’t understand. How did drugs get into my art?”

“You’re under arrest for the possession of fentanyl,” Rebel said.

“You can’t be serious!” Jordan protested.

“What are you doing?” Honor’s voice quivered. “This is insane! I can’t even believe this!”

Honor wasnotholding back her anger.

Rebel and Brit exchanged glances.

“It’ll be fine, honey,” Jordan said. “I’ll be out on bail, by morning.”

As Rebel Mirandized him, one of the officers cuffed him.

“This is too much,” Honor bleated. “You’re making a mistake. He buys art, not drugs.”

As the officer led Jordan toward the cruiser, Honor ran over, spoke quietly with him.

When Honor returned, she said, “My mother is a monster and my stepdad is accused of being a drug dealer.” She glared at Brit. “It’s bad enough that you’re a liar, but now you’ve arrested him for drugs. He collectsart. Not drugs.”

While waiting for the crime techs, Rebel pulled Brit away from Honor. “I’m taking primary on the drug bust.”

“Understood,” she replied.

“We can’t switch to DEA in the middle of an investigation, so I’m sticking with FBI.”

“Makes sense.”

“I’m not sure what makes sense at this point,” he bit out. “You had a great find in there.”

Her gaze stayed locked on his. She offered a little nod, nothing more.

Minutes later, the crime techs’ van pulled up. As the team was pulling on protective gear, Rebel stepped away to speak with the lead before rejoining the group.

“If Jordan had known that fentanyl was in those paintings, he would never have bought them.” Frustration tinged Honor words. “How long until I can come back here?”

“Tomorrow,” Rebel replied. “They’ve gotta test for fentanyl dust.”

“I don’t even have my home,” Honor murmured.

“We’re family, Honor,” Brit said. “You can stay with us.”

Relief washed over Honor’s face. “Thank you.”

“I’m takin’ off.” Rebel wrapped his hand around Brit’s arm. “Walk with me.”

Out of earshot, he said, “I’m gonna question Jordan. Honor might talk to you without him to lean on. She might know more than she’s letting on.”

“I’ll see what I can find out,” Brit said.

Despite the mayhem, so much love flowed between them. He would give up children, and be grateful he’d found his person. That’s how much she meant to him.

“Call me if there’re any updates,” she said.

As Rebel drove toward the police station, he glanced at his dad’s ring. After all these years, had he finally caught up with the past?
