She typed, “Maybe we can meet, sometime. Coffee?”Should I send it?She imagined Danielle encouraging her, so she hit send.

A text came in at the same time. “Coffee sometime?” he texted.

She smiled. “Sure,” she texted back. “Looks like we’re both thinking the same thing. I’ll check my schedule and get back to you.”

When no dots appeared, she called Stryker.

He answered, “Did you ditch your car and walk?”

“I’m so sorry. I forgot. I’m not used to calling anyone when I get home. I’m at home and I’m fine.”

“Whatcha doing?” he asked.

“In bed, glass of wine,” she replied.

“Mmm, sounds sexy.”

She chuckled. “If you saw what I was wearing, you would not think I’m sexy.”

“You’re always sexy.”

He made her smile. “Thank you.”

“Emerson, you don’t know me that well, but there’s something I should tell you.”

Here it comes.“You’re in a relationship.”

“No. I wouldn’t have had sex with you if I was in a relationship.”

“Hmm, good to know.”

“I’m aware that you’re self-sufficient and independent. You’re a detective, so you don’t need anyone to protect you. In fact, you’re the one doing the protecting…”

Pause.

“I’m in your driveway.”

She flew out of bed and peeked out the window. Sure enough, he was outside, straddling his motorcycle, his helmet on his lap, his phone in his hand. That man is a whole lotta yummy.

“Well, I’m good. Thanks for dropping by,” she said, before hurrying downstairs.

She deactivated the alarm and went outside, closing the door so the cat wouldn’t bolt. And she ran into his arms.

He pulled her close and kissed her so good, she melted into him.

“Did you miss me?” she asked.

“Hell, no, why would you think that?” His devilish smile lit her insides on fire.

“I just opened a bottle of wine. C’mon in.”

They walked inside and she re-alarmed.

“I’m not staying,” he said.

“Sure, you aren’t.” She led him into the kitchen and poured him a glass of wine. “If you flee the scene in the middle of the night, I’ll know.”

“So, I’m trapped?” He sipped the wine.
