“This one.”
Providence picked up a slice covered in black olive pieces and took a bite. “Mmm, you and Mrs. Morris make the best pizza.”
The child beamed at her.
Dakota asked Sammy about her afternoon and she chatted away between bites. When they’d devoured the slices, Mrs. Morris retrieved a covered cake tray and set it in the center of the table.
“Daddy, close your eyes.” Dakota shut them while Mrs. Morris removed the cover. “Okay, you can open them.”
The chocolate cake had a border of delicate pink flowers with green stems. Providence’s heart stuttered as she read the words in red icing.
BEST DADDY EVER!
“We spelled the words and Mrs. Morris, she did the flowers!”
“Wow, Sammy, that’s beautiful. What a great surprise. But it’s not my birthday and it’s not Father’s Day.”
Sammy placed her small hands on his cheeks. “You are the best daddy ever!”
Providence’s heart swelled. This was one special little girl.
After Dakota hugged her, he snapped a picture of the cake and one of Sammy with the cake. Then, he showed her both photos. “Thank you, honey, I love it.” Dakota cut four slices and passed them out. “Who wants coffee?”
“If you’re making it, I’ll have a cup,” Providence replied.
Miranda shook her head. “None for me.”
“Are we having movie night?” Sammy asked.
“I have to work tonight with Providence,” he replied.
Sammy’s expression plummeted and Providence’s heart broke. Not wanting to interfere, she stayed quiet.
“We can watch the movie together, Sammy,” Miranda said.
Tears filled her eyes. “I want Daddy to watchLady and the Trampwith me.”
“That’s one of my favorite movies.” Providence knew she shouldn’t have said a word, but work could wait ninety minutes.
Sammy gasped. “It is?”
“Oh, yeah.”
“Oh, boy, I’m outnumbered,” Dakota said while making coffee.
“Will you and Provi watch with us?” Sammy asked.
“Yes, we will, but after, you are going right to bed. Do you understand?”
“Hurray. Movie night!”
Once the coffee had brewed, Dakota filled two mugs and returned to the table. After trying the cake, he said, “Wow, this is fantastic.”
After dessert, Dakota cleaned up while Miranda helped Sammy change into her jammies.
Providence cleared the table, refilled her mug, and sat at the kitchen island sipping her drink. With the dishwasher loaded, Dakota sat beside her. “I’m not sure now is the best time for a movie, but I appreciate your flexibility.”
“You’re a lucky man to have such a wonderful child. Enjoy every moment with her.”
