When the plane landed, Kevin Anton greeted them with a tight smile before whisking them to her building. Once there, Sin exited the car and took her bag from Kevin.
“You don’t have to walk me inside.”
“Yes, I do.”
After entering her small apartment, he pulled out his Glock and checked every room and every closet. He even checked beneath her bed and in her shower. “Where’s your weapon?”
“I had to relinquish it when I turned in my badge.”
“You don’t have another?”
Inching closer, she shook her head.
“I have one at my office you can use.”
She peered up at him. “Thanks for this weekend.” That pretty much covered everything.
“My pleasure.” He didn’t move, as if his feet were cemented to the floor.
Unable to resist him, she rose up and dropped a soft kiss on the corner of his mouth. “Quid pro quo. I owe you one.”
“You know I’m all about delayed gratification.”
“That’s a bunch of crap and I’m disallowing it going forward.”
“Who made you the boss?”
She pointed at herself. “There’s a new sheriff in town, cowboy, and you’re looking at her.”
His smile spread, sending shockwaves through her.So beautiful.
“Saddle up and ride,” he said on his way out.
As she shut and bolted the door, she smiled. “Saddle up and ride sounds pretty damn good to me.”
THAT EVENING, SHE WENT to pick up Hannah for their Lamaze class. As soon as she walked in, the smell of fish wafted into her nostrils while boisterous laughter erupted from the kitchen.
No way, not again? She dropped her handbag on the sofa and entered the kitchen to find Hannah and Joey busy making fish tacos.
“Hey!” Hannah grinned. “How was your trip?”
Evangeline had mentioned in passing that she had to head out of town for a day. “Nothing worth mentioning.” She tossed Joey a nod. “You’ve become quite a regular.”
“Hey, Evangeline.” Before she could back off, he swooped in to hug her. “You look fantastic. Wow.” Keeping him at arm’s length, she backed away. As soon as she put some space between them, he gave her the once-over.
Hannah caught her eye and scowled at her. “Sorry, not a hugger,” Evangeline mumbled.
When Joey turned back to the stove, she shrugged at her sister. Hannah mouthed, “Be nice.”
“What brings you by, Joey?” Evangeline filled a glass with water and drank it down.
“Hannah was such a great tour guide, I wanted to say thank you by making her dinner. Breaking bread together is such a blessing.”
“Awww,” Hannah replied.
Evangeline wanted to gag. “Hannah, don’t we have class tonight?”
“No, it was canceled because of the holiday. I sent you a text. Didn’t you get it?”
