Kai looks like a man who would walk into Hell itself if I asked him to.

“Good,” he says softly.

Then his eyes return to Jonas.

“Now.”

He loosens the cuffs of his shirt with deliberate slowness.

“Why is this man in your classroom?”

Joel laughs nervously.

“Oh, come now, Montego. Mary and I were just discussing?—”

“My question wasn't for you.”

The room goes silent.

Kai's eyes never leave mine.

“Firecracker?”

I take a shaky breath.

“He offered to reinstate the permits if I'd sleep with him.”

Thirty

Kai

Pure.

Fucking.

Rage.

That's all I feel when I step into Mary's classroom.

Not annoyance.

Not irritation.

Not even anger.

Rage.

Because my Firecracker is standing behind her desk.

Shaking.

Papers everywhere.

Coffee spilled.

And Joel fucking Jonas is leaning over her desk like he owns the place.

For one horrible second, my brain flashes back to the dance.
