“You think you’re up for taking them?”

Darius looked at me with worry deep within his eyes, and the drugs had yet to wear off completely. I wasn’t too sure if I would be able to fight, but I would find out sooner rather than later.

Two male werewolves came face to face with us as we stood there, unable to hide or disappear into a room. Darius squeezed my hand a little, as if I were some damsels in distress. Standing in front of him, I took my stance, and waited to at least throw a couple of punches in, if I could.

“Boss said you’d escape eventually; she wants you to come with us.” The shorter wolf said.

I laughed a little and rolled my eyes, Angelique was a bit bossy, and even more demanding than me.

“Sorry, no can do. But, if you could just point us to the nearest exit, that'd be great.”

There was a ton of sarcasm in my voice as I waited to see if they would charge at me.

I could see the shorter one tightening his fists, and looked like he would have run towards me, but something was stopping him. He smiled a devilish grin and shrugged his shoulders before him and his partner turned tail, and walked back the way they came, leaving us alone. At least we thought we were alone.

“Hello, Hayley.”

That voice shookme to my very core, and tears instantly swelled in my eyes. I dared not turn around for fear it was just the drugs messing with my mind, and I had to stop every inch of my body from moving.

Darius was the first one to look, and a gasp escaped his lips. If he could see her, did that mean was she really there?

“Mom?”

My voice was barely above a whisper, and when I found the courage to turn around, she was standing there. She looked as if she hadn’t aged a day, which made alarm bells ring. Her beautiful green eyes had a hint of red in them. She wasn’t my mother, not anymore.

“So, they turned you?”

“Whatever do you mean, darling?”

“Don’t play dumb with me. I know what you are.”

Of course, I knew what she was, I was capable of spotting a vampire a mile off, except for Darius but he’s different. A normal run-of-the-mill vampire was easy to see.

The red tinted eyes, the pale 'desperately in need of a suntan' skin, the sunken cheeks, and the scent of their blood was overpowering.

“My bad, forgot you were a bore. Angelique saved me after the mission went south. I’m here now, and I can always be at your side. That’s why she sent for you. I wanted to see my beautiful daughter.”

She opened her arms to me, an invitation for a hug, and I stepped back, wishing I had a gun or my stake on me. She may look and sound like my mother, but that wasn’t her anymore. A creature of darkness replaced her soul and was just walking around using her as a meat-suit.

“Don’t be like that, my little mouse. It really is me.”

The nickname she used to call me as a child stung like a thousand needles in my heart. After her death, I grieved, locking myself away in that room in the manor, begging the universe to give her back to me.

I stayed up all hours of the night watching videos of her, listening to little voice notes she had sent me, and in just seconds she had been ripped away from me.

“I am…not your little mouse.”

It broke me to say those words. Even though she was a vampire now, she still looked like my mother, and it pained me deeply.

“Oh, I see.”

Her eyes darkened suddenly as did the hallway, as if the lights were dimmable, and darkness surrounded us. Darius was still at my side as we both eagerly watched her movements, to see what she was going to do next.

“Hayley, you may not know anything about mates, but I sure do. And if you don’t do as you're told and come with me now, I will rip out Darius’ heart…Well actually,"

She paused, and with vampire speed, she appeared right in front of us, and plunged her hand right into Darius' chest, and the scream that escaped from me was enough to make even a dogs' ears hurt. Darius curled over a little as my mother squeezed her hand, and I could feel all the pain he was feeling.
