“I need to tell you something,” he says, holding my arms again.
His grip is exactly as I remembered. Firm but gentle. Warm as his gaze searching my eyes. For what, I don’t know but I don’t think it’s to find a way to tease me or fuck with me to get a reaction.
“Is something wrong?” I ask, surprised by how concerned I am for him.
Trent’s cheeks puff before he blows out a breath. That cinnamon sweetness warms my skin. Heat blooms at the base of my spine as my clit pulses.
“Meghan, I did something. Something I regret.Deeply.”
It can’t be me. We haven’t done anything except study. What else would he have to talk to me about?
Yep. Roberta was wrong and I’m dumb. He’s here about something school-related. He failed or cheated or something and wants my help. “I can talk to your professor. A good word from the agency might be enough— “
“This isn’t about school. It’s about… Us.”
Okay. I’m confused. “What about us?”
There’s an us?!
Trent lets go of me and raises one hand to scrub the back of his neck. “You know me. I do shit without thinking. Get off on the shit I stir up.”
“Yeah, I know. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t want to be alone with you.”
“There was more than one reason?” The contrition in his tone and body language evaporates. The cocky, ornery Trent takes its place.
“It’s not important.”
“Oh, Teach,” Trent says, closing the few inches of distance between us. “It most certainly is. If you haven’t noticed, you’re alone with me now.” He pushes a stray lock of hair that fell out of my bun behind my ear.
I can’t stop my head from tilting, my eyes drifting shut as I melt into his touch.
“Please. Let me kiss you. Just once. Before you hate me again,” he asks with unbelievable sincerity.
I open my eyes to find his full of pain.
This is wrong. These feelings are bound to get me hurt.
Only if you latch onto them.
Maybe if I indulge my desire a little bit, I can prove to myself I don’t need any more. Convince myself that this was just some silly crush I need to get over. One kiss might be exactly what I need to move on.
Tilting my chin, our lips meet. Soft and slow, at first, but with every passing second, we fall more deeply into each other. Our lips take over. Before I know it, my arms are around his shoulders and his are wrapped tightly around my torso. My breasts flatten against the hard-muscled plane of his chest and abs.
“Wait.” Trent pants as he breaks the kiss. He’s still holding me but his body is tense now. “We can’t.”
My chest tightens. I push away from him. “Fuck. You’re messing with me, aren’t you?”
Trent steps forward, his eyes wide and wild. “No. I just need a second— “
“I knew it. I knew I shouldn’t let my guard down. Damn it, Trent.”
How could I let this happen? Kissing him was bad enough but I let myself care for him. Let him break my heart. Could I be any dumber?
“Let me explain,” Trent begs.
“And let you drag me further into whatever sick joke this is? Let you make an even bigger fool of me? No. Get out.” I shove him toward the door.
“Please, baby.”
