“I’m all about working with others. What times do you need?” This is weird, beyond weird. I’ve never actually had a job ask me what hours I needed.
“Ideally? Nine to one.”
“PM to AM, yes?”
“Yes.”
“That works for me. You can start tomorrow,” he says.
“That’s it?” I blurt out so quickly that I reach up and cover my mouth with my hand. Devon chuckles, but he doesn’t look offended by my little outburst.
“What else would there be?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never had an interview that went like this before,” I tell him.
“How have they gone?”
“Well, they usually ask my qualifications and if I’ve ever done this work before.” He waves his hand through the air as if to dismiss what I’ve said.
“This isn’t a hard job.”
“Okay. Well, then, thank you for the opportunity,” I tell him.
“Did you want to know the pay?” Shit. I didn’t even think to ask that.
“Yes, please.”
“I’ll pay you twenty an hour to start. We’ll go from there,” he says. Twenty to start? Nowhere else I’ve applied has offered me that much or even thought about the hours I need.
“Sounds great. Thank you again,” I say as I stand and offer him my hand. I watch his eyes as they slip over me until he stands and takes my hand in his. The electricity that runs between us is something I’ve only read about in books, not something I’ve ever felt in real life. His eyes lock with mine, and there’s something dark in them. Something that calls to me.
“No, thank you. I think I’m going to like working with you,” he says smoothly. I smile at him and slowly pull my hand awaybefore turning and heading out of his office. As soon as I’m at the elevators, I let out a breath. That man is intense.
I head back through the lobby, saying goodnight to the security guard as I go. Then I walk out to my car and climb in.
“Strange,” I whisper to myself because it is strange. How did I get chosen for that job? I’m sure there were a ton of people applying for it. I couldn’t have been the only one.
I shove the key in and start the car before taking off, but when I glance in my rearview mirror, I swear I see the same glowing green eyes I saw near my house.
I swallow hard and press the accelerator a little harder, driving a little faster to get the hell out of here.
It doesn’t take me long to make it home and check my surroundings. When I don’t see anyone, I climb out and close my door, ready to tell Megan about the interview.
As soon as I step inside, she’s there.
“What did they say?” she asks excitedly.
“I got the job.”
“No shit?”
“And do you know who I’m working for?” I ask her. She narrows her eyes and shakes her head.
“Who?”
“Devon Knight.”
“What the hell? No way!”
