“No, we got a room.”
Holly sighs with relief, but then the words sink in, and her body stiffens.
“A room?” Holly’s eyes widen. “As in one room? Uno?”
“Uno. The last room.”
Holly looks up at the awning keeping us from getting even more wet than we already are.
“Here’s the key. You go on up, and I’ll grab our things.”
I hand her the little key attached to a purple circle with the room number on it, jingling it so that she looks back down and takes it. She hasn’t heard the other part of the news yet. While I am actually thrilled to share a bed with her, I know she’s going to be less than excited.
“I’ll hit the vending on the way up to grab some drinks and a couple snacks.”
“I’ll pay you back my half. I promise.”
“Hey, it’s no big deal.”
She turns around, and I hear her mutter, “One stinking room.” I press my lips together, trying not to laugh. It’s not funny. It’s totally funny.
I manage to get all of our things without dropping anything in a puddle and score the last few good snacks along with two sodas and the last bottle of water out of the vending machines. When I get to our cracked door, I find Holly sitting at the table staring at the one, very empty, out- of-any-other-options bed in this motel.
Chapter 10
Holly
This is unbelievable. Just our luck. How?! How does this kind of shit happen to me? The backup ride, the motorcycle, the rain, now this? One hotel room? One freaking bed? At least it’s a king. That’s the only good thing.
Jaxon pushes into the room, his eyes taking in the one bed before flicking to mine. He presses his lips together, clearly thinking before blurting some smartass comment. He must see that I’m trying to play this cool. How am I supposed to lay next to this Adonis of a man and keep my hands to myself, especially knowing the way his lips taste and knowing that he feels the exact same way? I’ve been fighting this attraction, but I’m only human, and I don’t know if I can do it.Damn.I’m going to have to sleep laying on my hands.
“Hey, you’re safe with me,” he says, seeing the mini freak out my brain is having.
Oh, but buddy, you might not be safe with me.
“I trust you.”
“Okay, good. The look in your eyes had me worried for a sec. I will totally sleep on the floor if you are absolutely against sharing that bed with me.”
“No, that’s absurd. But I am stealing the first shower. I feel disgusting.”
“Ladies first. I did manage to score the last water, a few sodas, and a couple of the good snacks. I’ll start browsing for a movie for us.”
“Okay, yeah, cool,” I reply, mentally smacking myself for sounding so…so,gah, weird.Go get your ass in the shower.
“Enjoy the hot water. Save just a little for me though, please.”
“Oh, if you insist,” I tease back as I walk into the bathroom and shut the door. Not thinking at all about other ways water could be conserved.I don’t bother to lock it because I do trust him that way. Heart-wise? To be determined. Plus, what if my clumsy ass falls? I rush through the shower, deciding to leave him more than a little hot water. Though it does feel fucking fantastic running over my muscles after all that cold rain seeped into my bones.
Thankfully, I shaved this morning, so I’m not completely prickly if our legs happen to rub up against each other. My head snaps forward out of the water. Oh shit, what if our legs rub up against each other?Chill the fuck out. That might be the least of it.It’s only eight o’clock. Too early for sleep. If I hate the movie, I guess I can still read. I have plenty of books on my phone.
I brush my teeth and call it a day. The man’s already seen me looking like something the cat dragged in, so it obviously can’t get any worse. Oh…but it can. I didn’t pack any pajamas in the small bag. Just a change of clothes in case of emergency.
“Jaxon…” I draw out as I step into the room in my towel. He sits up quickly in the chair and runs his hand across hismouth after a sip of soda, his eyes scanning me from head to toe like he’s expecting something to be wrong.
“What’s wrong?”
“I didn’t pack pajamas in this bag. You don’t by chance have an extra shirt or something you wouldn’t mind me sleeping in?”
