She shifted so she could look up at me properly. “What do you even do all day?”
A fair question. One I normally wouldn’t answer.
I hesitated for half a second, then decided to go against my better instincts. She had a right to know.
“Mainly attend meetings,” I said. “Logistics. Making sure shipments move when they’re supposed to.”
Her eyes sharpened just slightly but she didn’t interrupt.
So I continued. “Checking routes of the stuff we’re shipping or intend to ship. Verifying who’s reliable and who isn’t.” I paused, my thumb brushing slowly along her side. “Fixing problems when they show up.”
“That sounds vague.”
I chuckled. “It’s pretty boring to be honest.”
Addy studied me for a moment longer, then nodded as though she were filing it away.
“Do you have performance reviews?”
“Yes.”
“Do you pass them?”
“I’m still alive.”
She grimaced. “Wow. Low bar.”
“What can I say … The stakes are pretty high around here.”
This earned me another soft laugh, but it faded more quickly this time, and her fingers slowed against my skin.
“You’re actually telling me things,” she observed quietly.
“I said I would.” I held her gaze. “Don’t make me regret it.”
“I won’t,” she said immediately, then hesitated. “I just … I like knowing what’s going on. Even if it’s just fragments.”
I let my hand drift up into her hair, threading through it slowly.
Fuck, I was really tempted to stay in bed with her and just ignore everything waiting for me downstairs.
But that wasn’t how this worked and it never would be.
So I pressed a brief kiss to the top of her head instead and shifted slightly beneath her.
“Stay here for a bit,” I murmured. “I’ll have someone bring you coffee.”
Her voice was softer now, muffled against my chest. “You’re setting a dangerous precedent.”
I snorted. “I know.”
“And I’m absolutely going to take advantage of it.”
Warmth filled my chest. I could absolutely get used to this.
“I expect nothing less.”
Addy huffed softly against my chest. Before she could say anything else, however, there was a faint buzzing sound coming from somewhere in the sheets between us.
