“I’m just jerking you around, bro. Good for you.”
“Is Reese here yet?”
She nodded. “Nice way to change the subject. Don’t think we’re done talking about this mystery woman.”
“Can you send him in here? Please and thank you.” I ignored her snide remark and cheeky grin.
“Don’t forget about the parent-teacher thing tonight at Em’s school. You have to make it to one before she leaves that place.”
“I promise I will be there with bells on.”
Piper stuck her tongue out at me—her normal bratty move—before leaving to get my VP.
Reese strode in a moment later. “You needed to see me?”
“Shut the door,” I growled before lighting a cigarette and throwing him the pack.
“What’s going on?”
I took in a deep breath. “I found Elijah Clark last night at the Red Crow.”
His eyes grew ten times as he took in a long drag. “No fucking way,” he said on an exhalation with a puff of smoke.
“I think it was him anyway. I met his ex-girlfriend last night. He had blacked-out ink and everything. It has to be him.” I paused for a moment before continuing. “I’m meeting her there tonight. I need you and Jett to wait in the parking lot just in case he shows up. I don’t think he put two and two together when I pulled him off of her in the bar.”
“Shouldn’t we bring this to the club?” Reese worked his jaw, waiting for my response.
“We should, but there isn’t time, and I don’t really give a fuck about procedure right now. What if we lose him again?” That was something I would not be able to stomach. I had been waiting for this day for more than ten years and I was not going to let this golden opportunity slip through my calloused grasp.
“I couldn’t agree more, and I am on it.” The fire that lit in the back of Reese’s eyes was contagious. The second part of my revenge was finally going to play out.
Even though I knew it wasn’t going to fix anything, I would sleep better at night knowing there was one less scumbag out there in the world.
“Today is going to be a good day.” I snickered as Reese got up from his seat.
“That it is, brother. That it is.”
Reese left the office and I leaned back in my chair, thinking about all the fucked-up things I was going to do to Elijah. He had been living on borrowed time for the last decade, and I was going to make that very clear to him as soon as I got my hands on that piece of dog shit.
Chapter 10
Kinsley
Holy hell.
As I lay in my empty bed, all I could think about was how amazing Maccon had made me feel the night before.
I wasn’t typically the chick who got picked up in a bar and fucked a perfect stranger, but something was different about Maccon. Something in his sad eyes and his grizzled yet sweet demeanor told me he was one of the good guys.
Glancing over at the digital clock on my nightstand, I realized my alarm was about to go off, telling me it was time to get my ass in gear. As soon as the blaring buzzer sounded, I slapped the top of the machine and forced myself to climb out of bed.
Shower.
Brush my teeth.
Blow-dry and style my hair.
Put on the least amount of makeup possible.
