I ran my hand over my face. “I am not screwing her. I love her.”
He stopped dead in his tracks. “I want to hate you so bad. I want to fucking beat the living hell out of you, but Leilani is so damn happy. How are you two so calm right now?”
“Because we love each other,” I replied matter-of-factly.
“This is all so fucked. You do know that right? She can’t even drive! We’re just kids! How is this all going to work out?”
“Because we don’t have any other choice.” I didn’t know what else to say.
“We have to tell my mom. That is going to be a fucking shit show.”
“We’ll tell my parents first and they will help us.”
“They are going to kill all of us. Like all of us. Not just you and Leilani, I’m in this now, too.”
“They won’t.” They probably would, but I didn’t want to admit that while my best friend was freaking out.
“Do you really love her? I didn’t think you could possibly love a chick. You have never spent more than a night with a girl since you lost your virginity to that counselor at band camp.”
“Leilani is not some chick. She’s everything to me.”
“You better be real here, man. This is my sister we’re talking about.”
“Look, dude, I fucking swear I am more than aware of how big all of this is. It’s going to be so damn messy, but I am not going to be like your dad. I am not going anywhere.”
“I’ll kill you if you hurt her.”
“I would never, and you should know that about me by now. I am at least a man of my word.”
He shoved his hands in his pockets. “Yeah, okay. Well, I’m happy it’s you and not someone like Jackson Mallory.”
“Fuck, me too.”
