“I’m sorry I asked.”
Finn shrugged. “That’s life, you know. Nothing to be sorry about.” He paused for a moment. “So tell me about that guy at the bar. What happened?”
“Why would you want to know about that?”
Finn started to lace our fingers together. “Well, I thought you might want to talk about the difficulty of having just been cheated on. If you do, I’ll listen, but if not, I understand.”
I laughed a little at the ridiculousness that had unfolded only days before, though it felt like it had been months at that point. “Actually, I wastheother woman.”
“Oh jeez.” Finn’s lips perked up at the corners as he stifled a laugh. “Now, that’s a shame.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because no one as incredible as you should be anyone’s secret. You deserve to be loved out loud.”
I leaned over the table, eyes closed as I reached for his lips, but air and a coughing sound were all I was met with. I opened my eyes to see Johnny standing next to our table with the plates of food in hand as I was leaned halfway over the table. I could feel my cheeks and neck prickle with heat as Finn chuckled in front of me.
“Thanks,” Finn said to Johnny as he set the food in front of us, smiling sheepishly at me.
“Enjoy.”
“Well, that was awkward.” I popped a fry into my mouth.
Finn leaned over the table and I met him halfway, his lips full and soaked in his milky beer. It was pure electricity, more so than I had ever felt, and it was just a simple peck of a kiss. Just as quickly as it started, it ended, and my butt was planted back on its stool. I devoured the most delectable lamb burger I had ever tasted. Come to think of it, it was the only lamb burger I had ever had, but it was surely not going to be my last.
Feeling overly stuffed and like a complete pig, I gulped down the bottom of my second Magner’s and beamed over the table at Finn. “This has been great.”
He nodded, waving at Johnny for the check. “It really has been terrific.”
Johnny came over with the folded bill in his shirt pocket and another round for us in hand. “Just one more, on the house. For old times.”
“Thanks, Johnny.” Finn handed him a few bills out of his wallet. “Keep the change.”
After taking a quick drink from his glass, Finn had a foamy Guinness stash dripping on his upper lip.
“You, uh, have…” I pointed to his lip and we both busted out laughing.
He wiped it away with his paper napkin. “Good?”
I nodded, still giggling a little. “Yeah, you got it.”
“So today was…interesting.”
I rolled my finger around the rim of my glass. “Interesting is definitely a word to describe it.”
“How would you describe it?” His eyes were locked on mine, suddenly smoldering as he licked his bottom lip.
“Frustrating. One of the exact reasons why I make it a point to not mix business with pleasure.”
“But don’t you remember, breaking the rules can be simply brilliant.” A devilish grin crept onto Finn’s lips as images of our shower together popped into my head.
“I do remember.”
