Epilogue
about 4 months later
“Cali?” Kyle was planting small kisses on my cheek, slowly waking me up from a deep sleep way too early in the morning for a Sunday. “Cali, come on. I have a surprise for you.”
I slowly let my eyes open and adjust to the light pouring into our bedroom. “What?” I grumbled, trying to roll away from my boyfriend’s goofy grin.
“Don’t you know what day it is?” Kyle’s husky voice was laced with excitement.
“The day I kill you for not letting me get enough sleep?”
He laughed, sitting up in the bed. I heard him open and close the nightstand drawer and then shift back over to me.
After clearing his throat, he grabbed my hand. “California Cline?”
I mumbled, “Should have never told you my full name.”
“Cali, I am a cop; I would have figured it out one way or another. Anyway, Cali, look at me.”
My eyes fluttered open, straining to focus on Kyle’s cheesy grin. “What?” I barked.
“I know this might seem fast, and I know you just moved in, but I just cannot wait one more day to ask you. Cali, will you marry me?”
I shoved up in bed, resting my back again the headboard. Now I’m awake.“What?” I giggled a bit, trying to make sense of what was happening.
Kyle opened the small box in his hands to reveal a princess cut solitaire ring. “Marry me, Cali. Make me this happy for the rest of our days together on this planet.”
I leaped into his arms, tackling him onto the bed. “Yes! Of course I will marry you!”
He slid the small band around my ring finger with a sigh of relief. “Not going to lie, I was nervous you were going to say no.”
I couldn’t take my eyes off how the ring sparkled in the morning sunlight that was pouring in through the windows. “Why would you ever think that?”
“Because we haven’t been together that long. Most people will think we’re rushing into things.”
I grabbed his shoulder, pulling my new fiancé in for a kiss. “Fuck them. When you find true love, wasting time is pointless.”
“God, I love you.” Kyle crushed our lips together, pulling me on top of him.
After a few minutes of holding each other, Kyle’s alarm started going off on his phone. “Shit!” He shot up out of bed. “I’m going to be late for my shift.”
“But baby, we just got engaged. Call in sick so we can lay in bed all day and celebrate, maybe bust out the Kama Sutra and see if we can find something new to try.”
Pulling up his pants, Kyle made his way back over to the bed where I was trying my hardest to do a good pouting face. “I’ll be home before dinner. You find something you want to try and I will be all yours by sunset.”
He ran out of the house and I dove into the shower. Right as I was turning off the water and getting ready to towel off, Mags’ ringtone started blaring on the counter. I hopped out, excited to tell my best friend my amazing news.
“Hey Mags, guess what!” All I could hear was her sniffling and her light cries in the background. “Mags?”
“Hey, Cali. You had something to tell me?” Her voice was weak and shaking.
I wrapped my dripping body in a towel. “No, you first. I can wait.” She started bawling and howling into the phone. “What is it love?”
“Randy.” Her voice trembled.
“Yeah, what about Randy?” Panic started to settle in as a text from Mitch came through.
Mitch: You need to get to Mags’ house right now. Something is really wrong.
