“What sort of change?” she asked, taking a sip from her cup.

“I will not be marrying Clarissa,” he said before his nerves could make him pause.

Silence fell upon them, filling the space like a physical weight. After a moment, she put her cup down.

“Is that so?”

“Yes, she… she appears to have gone. Fled in the night. There was a letter stating she was leaving to elope with an officer I had never heard of. Her younger sister, Genevieve, has taken her place.”

He kept his eyes on her face while he said it, because he had learned early that the worst thing one could do with bad news was look away from the person receiving it. It gave the impression of shame, and whatever else he felt this morning, he did not intend to be ashamed of what could not be helped.

He watched her take it in. Watched her absorb it without expression, the way she absorbed everything, that extraordinary capacity she had for receiving the world's various disasters without allowing them to rearrange her face. She had been doing it since before he was born. He suspected she would be doing it long after he had stopped requiring it of her.

She looked at him for a long moment. The house was quiet around them. From somewhere deeper in it came the ordinary morning sounds, a door, somewhere; the distant industry of the household going about its business in ignorance of what was being rearranged in the dining room. The light through the narrow window by the door lay across the floor in a single pale stripe.

Then she reached out and took his hand. Both of hers, around his, dry and small and very steady, the hands of a woman who had held a great many things together over a great many years. She pressed it once, firmly.

The way she had when he was eight years old and his horse had thrown him in the far field and he had walked all the way back to the house alone rather than cry where anyone could see him, and she had been waiting at the kitchen door with a look on her face that told him she had known exactly where he was and had allowed him the dignity of making his own way back. She had taken his hand then in exactly this way. She had not said a word then either.

She released him. Gave a single nod.

Then she stood up.

“We should prepare to go to the chapel,” she said.

“... Yes,” he said softly. She left the dining room, and the house settled quietly back around him. He allowed himself precisely as long as her footsteps on the stairs. That was all. The length of her retreat, the soft, deliberate sound of her ascending, unhurried, as she was always unhurried, and then he put it away. All of it.

The morning as it had been supposed to be. The specific and sourceless feeling—one he did not examine closely enough to name—that had settled somewhere in his chest in the study when her father had told him and had not entirely left since. He put it somewhere dark and closed, the way he had learned to put things, and straightened his coat, and went to see about the arrangements.

There was a great deal still to be done. That was the useful thing about a great deal still to be done. It did not leave room for the alternative.

The chapel was small and old and smelled of the particular combination of things that old chapels always smelled of, cold stone and beeswax and the faint, sweet staleness of flowers from a previous occasion, overlaid now with whatever fresh arrangements had been produced at short notice by people working very quickly.

The morning light came through the high, narrow windows in pale columns and lay across the flagstones in long diagonals, shifting almost imperceptibly as the clouds moved outside. Thomas stood at the front of it and was aware, in a way he did not usually permit himself to be aware of things, of every small detail of the space around him.

This was, he had found, what happened when he was not permitted to be doing anything. His attention turned outward and cataloged it all. The slight unevenness of the flagstones beneath his feet.

The sound of his grandmother settling in the pew behind him, one small, precise movement, and then absolute stillness. The hushed sounds near the door as the Penrose family arranged themselves, the mother's voice very low and her father's lower still, and beneath it something he could not quite make out, a murmured exchange that had the quality of reassurance.

He did not turn around.

He heard the door.

He did not turn immediately. He had learned, in the course of a long and occasionally difficult education in self-command, that the worst thing a man could do in a moment of such weight was to move too quickly. He looked instead at the vicar, a small, sensible-looking man who had the quietly composed air of someone who had conducted a great many ceremonies under a great many circumstances and had long since stopped finding any of them surprising.

And then he turned.

She was at the end of the aisle.

He registered several things at once, the way attention sometimes sharpened without permission and insisted on noticing. The dress first, her sister's dress, clearly, though whoever had worked on it in the intervening hours had done so with both speed and considerable skill, and it fit her well enough that he suspected only someone looking for the evidence would find it.

It was a pale color, something between ivory and cream, and the morning light caught the fabric as she moved and made it difficult to look away from.

Her chin was level. Her gaze was fixed toward the altar with the kind of focused intention that he recognized as a thing a person did when they were concentrating very hard on not looking at the room around them. Her face was composed, her green eyes steady.

Whatever she was feeling, she had arranged it behind an expression that gave away nothing, and he found himself, unexpectedly, in a way he did not quite account for, wanting to know what was behind it.

With Clarissa, he would have not known she was hiding anything at all, as she would let herself smile at the room and hide it with effortless charm. While Genevieve had some similarities to her sister, such as facial features or lip shape, she seemed much less inclined to hide her feelings. He had seen it before. Her joyous smile at dinner parties, the way her shoulders had slumped during their conversation.
