When the doc finally wraps up, Frank thanks him and tells the rest of us to go home and get a good night’s sleep.
Before we head out, we make plans for a rotating shift to cover visiting hours tomorrow. Ollie will probably be exhausted and asleep for most of it, but I’m sure he’ll be happy to see a familiar face or two when he wakes. It’ll give his father a break as well.
It’s after two when I finally get home, and I head straight to Ava’s place.
I need to give her an update on Davis, and we need to decide how we’re going to handle the situation with her father.
Adam ignored me on the way out, choosing to take a different elevator down from the trauma unit.
It’s just as well. We’re both tired, and we probably would’ve said things we didn’t mean.
Ava’s light is out when I get upstairs, and I pad down the hall quietly.
If she’s asleep, I don’t want to wake her. God knows it’s been a long day. She probably needs the rest.
There’s nothing I have to say that can’t keep until morning.
I strip off my clothes, leaving them in a heap near the door, and slip into bed with her wearing only my boxer briefs. She’s curled up with her knees pulled to her chest, and it breaks my heart to see her looking so vulnerable.
I curl my body around hers, my chest pressed to her slender back, and hold her tight in my arms.
Tomorrow is going to be another tough day, but tonight, we can close our eyes and forget the world outside this room exists.
GLIDERS COAST PAST FLYERS WITH LATE GOAL
The Atlanta Gliders defeated the Flyers (2-1) with a late third-period goal by captain Knox St. James, and an apple by Sebastian “Bash” Kristiansen, advancing to 11-7-4.
It was a heated game from the start, with St. James and Flyers captain Freddy Nelson getting into a tilt on the opening faceoff. St. James is usually one to avoid a scuffle, but we’re told the fight was provoked by an unsportsmanlike chirp from Nelson. Neither player was mic’d up, so it’s pure conjecture at this point, but both players were assessed major five-minute penalties, the first this season for St. James.
The first period yielded a lot of missed opportunities, with neither team able to capitalize, but things picked up in the second period when Flyers forward Dino Machissimo drew a two-minute slashing penalty, which opened the door for the Gliders. Forward Alex Smith answered the call with an eighty-five mile per hour bar down snapper that will go down as the play of the game. The Flyers rallied early in the third period with a goal by Filip Hedman, but they couldn’t hold on.
Coach Carlyle was unavailable for a post-game interview. We’ve since learned he left the arena and went straight toGrady Memorial to support Gliders forward Ollie Davis. Davis was in a motor vehicle accident last night and is currently in critical condition. Police say there was no alcohol or drugs involved and no charges will be brought at this time.
While the Gliders put on a solid performance on the ice, the team’s mascot Chippy stole the show when his mischievous alter ego glided into the arena via zipline and spent the game taunting the Flyers bench. Only time will tell if Chippy 2.0 will make a repeat appearance, but there’s no denying the fans loved it!
The Gliders will face off with the Devils on Wednesday, November 26that 8 p.m. at the Triada Center.
