Aidan comes up beside me, his presence steadying. "You seem...tense. Which is understandable… I just want to make sure you’re okay."
I scoff. "Tense…that's one way of putting it. But we do what we have to do." I shrug, not wanting to discuss my complicated feelings. "Right now, that means taking down Tane. Nothing else matters."
Aidan studies me for a long moment before nodding. "You're right. We have a job to do." His hand finds mine, giving it a gentle squeeze. "Just remember I'm here for you. Whatever happens with Tane."
I smile, grateful for his unfailing support. "I know. You always have been."
“And speaking of which, thank you for giving me a kick in the ass and reminding me of what really needs to be done,” he adds, his expression serious as he gazes into my eyes. “You and Devon are right. It’s the only way.”
Butterflies dance in my stomach. This is a huge compliment coming from Aidan, who’s usually cynical and skeptical about any plans, including his own.
Across the room, Skyler joins Roman and the others, his large figure moving with purpose.
Roman's eyes flick to mine for the briefest second, a silent acknowledgement passing between us.
We have a future to fight for, Together with my men beside me, I know we’ll triumph over the darkness that threatens to consume us.
I survey the warehouse, taking in the determined faces of my family. The Brixtons and Snakes have formed a strong bond, united in our common goal to bring down Tane Brown and dismantle his empire of evil, brick by bloody brick. We may not have been successful in our most recent attempt, but we came pretty damnclose.
Devon speaks up again. "Tane has evaded us for too long, hiding in the shadows while he destroys everything we hold dear. And gloating in plain sight. But his time is up. It won't be easy, but he will pay for the lives he's ruined and the havoc he's wrought. We’ll make sure of it."
I exchange a glance with Slade and Brick, seeing my own fierce determination reflected in their eyes. Roman appears at my side, his presence a silent promise. Whatever happens, we'll face it together.
"Tane thinks he's won," Devon continues, "that we'll crumble under the weight of his tyranny just like the people of these islands have been forced to do for far too long. But he's wrong. Our spirit isn’t so easily broken. We've endured too much, and come way too far to give up now." Her gaze sweeps the room, meeting each person's eyes in turn. "These are our islands. Our home. And we will defend this place with our last breath—sacrifice everything—to rid the world of Tane's evil."
No words are spoken, but the room is buzzing with an almost audible energy.
"Are we doing this?" Devon demands, her eyes blazing.
"Yes!" The shout is deafening, a battle cry that shakes the walls.
Devon smiles, sharp and fierce. "Then let's go to work."
I survey the determined faces around me, pride swelling in my chest. We’ve come so far, endured so much to reach this point.
All the pain, all the loss and sacrifice has led us here, to this moment of reckoning.
I think of the friends we’ve lost, their lives cut short by Tane's cruelty.
I remember the devastation left in the wake of his ambition, the trail of bodies and ruins he has left behind.
So much needless death and suffering, even by many innocent people, all for the sake of power and greed.
No more. The time has come to make him pay for his crimes, to bring him to justice once and for all.
I meet Devon's gaze across the room, seeing her own steely resolve reflected there. Together we’ve helped to lead our people through darkness, but now a new dawnis rising.
The future is ours to shape, a future without fear, without oppression. A future of freedom.
We turn to Aidan, Skyler and the others, our brothers in arms and so much more. The bonds between us have been forged in fire, an unbreakable loyalty that transcends words.
We’re ready for this fight, and without even knowing it, we’ve been preparing our whole lives for a moment like this.
Roman appears at my side, his presence a steadfast comfort. I know that whatever comes, he’ll be there with me. Just as I’ll be there for him, and for everyone who has placed their trust in me.
I smile, slow and sharp.
Let Tane come.
