With a final glance back, I hoist my backpack over my shoulder, turn off the lights, and close the door behind me. My heart pounds with equal parts fear and excitement. I have no idea what lies ahead, but I’m ready to find out. This cat and I have some dreams to chase.

After an uneventful Uber ride, I pull my suitcase across the sidewalk and into the bustling airport departures terminal, weaving my way through crowds of travelers. The sheer size of the terminal is overwhelming, with endless check-in lines and blaring flight announcements. My nerves spike.

Is this crazy? Uprooting my whole life on the slim chance I might excel in this team and make my rugby dreams become reality?

I shake my head, trying to push the doubts away. No, you’ve made your choice, Dylan. This is your shot.

I check my watch anxiously, worried about missing my flight. The woman ahead of me at check-in is yelling loudly, causing a huge delay.

“This is unacceptable!” she shrieks at the attendant. “I demand to speak to your manager!”

I sigh, shifting my weight from foot to foot. Come on already. But the rude woman continues her tirade. With no other choice, I wait it out, finally getting through check-in and rushing to catch my flight.

Once onboard, I stash Jonah under the seat in front of me and try to relax as the other passengers shuffle down the aisle. My nerves are shot as I jam my foot between Jonah and the side of the seat to make sure passengers can’t jostle him with their feet or luggage on the way past. For a moment, I wonder if I might have achieved the holy grail of an empty seat next to me, but that’s short-lived. My seatmate ends up being none other than the rude woman from before, already jabbering loudly into her phone. Great. I settle in for a long few hours.

For a moment, I worry that this is a sign from the universe that I should grab Jonah and go running back off this plane into the more comfortable life I’ve built. But I hold myself back. This is just a blip. Stay focused on the future. My new team, new city, new life. In this case, it’s about the destination and not the journey.

I’m jolted from my thoughts as the rude woman’s shrill voice pierces the cabin.

“This is outrageous!” she exclaims. “They allow animals in here? I’ve heard about this foolishness! Emotional support peacocks and miniature horse service animals! This world is going soft, I tell you!”

I glance down to see Jonah fidgeting in his carrier. The woman glares at me before flagging down a passing flight attendant and explaining to her how outraged she is by my fuzzy little companion.

“Ma’am, I must insist you keep your voice down,” the attendant says firmly. “The cat is allowed.”

“Well I never!” the woman sputters. “It’s completely unsanitary! What if I was allergic? I could… I could die!”

The attendant gives me an apologetic look. “I think she’s right… it seems like it would be best for you and your cat to move…”.

My mouth drops open. What’s she going to do? Force Jonah and I to jump out the exit door?

She continues. “…up to first class, away from this woman.”

I’m stunned. “Really? Oh, thank you!” My now-former seatmate fumes in shock and outrage as I grab Jonah and follow the attendant up front, settling into the spacious seat.

Jonah peeks out from his carrier, wide-eyed at the luxury surrounding us. I scratch behind his ears and sip champagne, feeling lighter than I have in ages.

This almost seems too good to be true. But maybe it’s a sign that I’m on the right path after all. That taking risks can pay off.

As we climb higher, my doubts and worries fade away. A new city, a new team, a new life. I’m ready for this adventure.

As the plane levels off, I gaze out the window, watching the city shrink into a distant speck. A bittersweet feeling washes over me. This place represents so many memories—good and bad. But it’s time to move on.

“Here we go, buddy,” I whisper to Jonah, slightly unzipping the carrier so I can slip a few Greenies in and massage his neck. “No looking back now. Our new life awaits.”

Jonah purrs softly, nuzzling against my hand. I take a deep breath, excitement and nervousness churning within me.

What will the new team be like? Will I finally get the chance I deserve, or will there be more politics and betrayal?

I shake my head. I can’t go down that rabbit hole again. This time will be different. I just have to stay positive.

The flight attendant returns with a smile. “How’s everything so far in first class?”

“Wonderful, thank you again,” I say earnestly.

“Of course. We want you and Jonah to be comfortable.” She hands me a cheese plate with crackers and grapes. “Here’s a little something for the journey ahead.”

I grin and give Jonah a little cube of cheese. Maybe this kindness is another sign of good things to come. I settle back in my seat, ready to see where this adventure takes us. The future is filled with possibility and hope.
