"It won't be easy, but we've got this, Alina. Together. One step at a time."
I manage a small smile, comforted by his reassurance. "One step at a time."
He squeezes my shoulder gently.
The simple touch sends a spark through me.
I meet his gaze, seeing my own tentative longing reflected back.
Slowly, reluctantly, we step apart.
But as I walk to my car, I feel Morello's eyes on me.
I turn back. He lifts his hand in a silent wave, his lips quirked in a half-smile.
My heart flutters.
With everything at stake, I hardly dare acknowledge the attraction growing between us.
But in that lingering glance, I see a future where we might explore this connection without fear. A future that, with Morello's help, I finally dare believe could be possible.
I drive away with hope for freedom, for justice, and maybe even for love.
The road ahead is uncertain, but now there is renewed hope. And that makes all the difference.
Chapter 31
Alina
Iglance around the dimly-lit corridor, my pulse drumming in my ears. As far as Gerald's concerned, we're on a school trip, an overnight stay at the children's museum.
I even drove us to the school in case his goons were following us, lugging in sleeping bags and other items on the list the teachers had prepared.
But, under the guise of darkness, we made our excuses with the school, feigning Yara's fear at having to spend the night away from her precious creature comforts.
Now, we're far away in a covert location with the one man who could possibly save us.
The shadows seem to creep and curl around us as we huddle together, their smothering darkness both shielding us and heightening the tension coiled in my muscles.
Yara's voice trembles slightly as she asks, "Will it really be like the movies, Mr. Agent Morello?"
He smiles, the gesture warm and reassuring on his usually serious face. "Better. Because we're writing our own ending, kiddo."
I can't help the swell of affection as I watch Morello's interaction with my daughter. He's so gentle, so patient with her questions. It's a side I never expected to see from the intense agent.
"We've got one shot at this." Morello's voice hardens, expression somber once more. "Everything's got to go just right."
His finger traces an invisible path on his phone's screen, mapping out the route we must take to escape Gerald's far-reaching grasp. Adrenaline surges through me, equal parts fear and anticipation. We're in this together now, bonded by our shared mission.
I meet Morello's gaze, reading the promise there. He'll keep us safe or die trying.
Something powerful passes between us in that loaded moment, speaking of possibilities beyond this dark night.
Morello's hand brushes against mine as he points out the last checkpoint, a jolt of electricity sparking at the contact.
"We'll get through this," he says softly, holding my gaze. I nod, my throat tightening with hope tinged with an unexpected attraction.
He leans back, the hint of a playful smile teasing his lips as he launches into an animated retelling of a past escapade. Yara's eyes widen, a delighted laugh escaping her as Morello regales us with the daring tale.
