It shouldn’t be, but what if it is?
What if we don’t get either of them?
I’m not sure I can live with that kind of heartbreak.
“That one needs to be stored. Mason, is there somewhere specific I should have them put it?”
Forcing myself to stop freaking out, I nod to Crew. “Mom had us set up Kiara’s old room for the two of you. There’s a room beside it you can use as a nest and across the hall is a spare room. Akira said it’s better to keep your extra stuff inside there instead of putting it in the garage. Shit, I guess I need to show you where that is.”
“I know where Kiara’s room is,” Adrian reminds me. So does Davis and Alexander, but Adrian’s been with Ruby since they were teenagers. As Kiara’s best friend, Ruby was always here, and she’d drag him with her all the time. My head is a mess.
He continues, “Why don’t we all grab a box and head that way? Since everything is being kept in the same general vicinity, we’ll just show everyone at the same time. Then Crew will just need to direct us on which room to set things in.”
“Good idea, man. Thanks.” I force a smile and step off the truck, determined to stay out of my head at least until we’ve finished unloading everything.
CHAPTER FIVE
Kiara
Iallow my best friend and her pack mate to corral me into their pack SUV as I try not to fall apart again. Ruby joins me in the backseat, while Allison climbs into the driver’s seat and pulls away.
I’m going to lose them all.
“Talk to me, Kiki.” Ruby wraps her arms around me, and I realize neither of us has bothered with a seat belt.
“Seat belt,” I remind her, giving myself a bit more time to figure out what I’m going to say to her as I reach for my own.
She grumbles, but with one look from Allison, she quickly pulls it on.
“There, Mom. My seat belt is on.” She sticks her tongue out at me, a smile tipping up the corners of her mouth. “Now, stop trying to put me off. I can’t help you if I don’t know what’s going on inside your head.”
“Crew is their scent match,” I whisper, tears slipping down my cheeks. I lift my legs onto the seat and wrap my arms around them as guilt rushes through me.
Crew just met his scent matches for the first time, and I left him alone with them.
Well, kind of.
Pack Hart is with them, and Crew knows them, so he’s not alone. But he doesn’t know Mason, Davis, and Alexander.
I’m so selfish.
All I could think about was getting out of there so they wouldn’t all see how my heart was ripped out of my chest.
I should be happy for Crew.
Not everyone is guaranteed to find their scent matches, but my best friend just found his.
Which, I hate to admit, is my worst nightmare.
Now there’s no reason for him to keep me around.
Did it have to be my stepbrother and his pack?
I knew fate was cruel, but I didn’t realize she was this cruel.
What had I done in a past life to get this unlucky?
Ruby sighs. “Yeah, he is. But who better for him to scent-match with? You’ve been in love with all four of them for years.”
