“It’s fine.”They came to a room with a large table, several chairs, and little else.

“Oh, what room is this?”she asked.

“It’s our conference room.We thought you’d be more comfortable in here instead of where we question the bad guys.”

She smiled.“I appreciate it.”

“The person will be in shortly.”

She nodded.“Thank you.At first, I didn’t think you guys took it seriously.”

“Oh, we do.It’s just one of those instances that make us angry because there is nothing we can do.We don’t like women or children to live in fear.”

“That’s good,” she said.

Connor pointed to a chair.“Have a seat.”

Emma sat in one of the cushioned chairs and set her purse on the table. It wasn’t long before she heard a few men outside the room talking, and then one cursed, and it sounded like they dropped something or hit the wall.

She looked up and smiled when the door opened. It took her a moment to realize it was Damon standing there. Her smile fell, and she stiffened.

He closed and locked the door, leaned back against it, and crossed his arms over his chest. It looked like he was holding himself back from something. She also noticed a muscle tick on the side of his jaw.

“So, um,” she swallowed.“Hi,” she said.

His head tipped forward, but he didn’t say anything. The way he was looking at her and his silence was taking a toll on her nerves.

Emma stood to face him.“So, um ...what are you doing here?”

“I’m going to be working with them on certain things.”

“Oh.”She nibbled on her lip and then looked away.

“Emma.”His growl got her attention.

Her head jerked around.“What?”

He bit down on his lower lip before speaking.“I’m trying to think of the best way to say this because I’m trying really hard not to yell at you.”

Her eyes widened.“Yell?Why?”

His mouth dropped open and then snapped shut. When the muscle in the side of his jaw started to throb, she knew she was in trouble. She hadn’t seen him this pissed since he was a child and always getting into fights.

Damon pinched the bridge of his nose and stayed quiet for a minute, looking like he was trying to calm himself.

When he looked at her, she knew it hadn’t worked. The fire of fury still lit up his eyes, and the brackets around his mouth were still tense.

“What the hell were you thinking?”he yelled.

He’d never shouted at her before, and she didn’t much like it.Her eyes narrowed, and she crossed her arms over her chest.“I don’t like to be yelled at.”

He looked like he’d been slapped for a moment and then growled.“How would you like my hand on your ass until it was a nice red color?”

She gasped.“You’d spank me?”

“Fuck, yes.”

“No.”
