Was I hell going to stay behind.

Chapter Five

Ruin

I didn’t know who the hell would be firing off a weapon here tonight of all nights. But I didn’t have long to find out.

I skidded to a halt. My feet just inches away from the pool of blood that was rapidly spreading on the floor. It had been seconds, just seconds since I had heard the shot. And yet that blood pool seemed unusually big.

I looked at it without really seeing it.

Death wasn’t a new thing for me. I had seen more than my fair share but this was different. This was….

My eyes rose, and Gems face swam into view. She looked ashen, her mouth open as scream after scream erupted from her mouth. It was a screeching sound, one that grated on my last nerve. Opening my mouth to tell her to shut up, I shut it again with a snap.

“Oh Ruin.” Avery was behind me. I could tell without turning. She had followed me even though I had told her to stay where she was.

And still, I couldn’t move.

It was like I was in some sort of trap. I knew what I should be doing. I just couldn’t do it.

It was only when Avery pushed her way past me that I reacted. Grabbing her around the waist I pulled her back against my front. The thought of her shoes in the blood, of her kneeling in the blood was more than I could bear.

“Ruin you have to let me go…. he needs help.”

More and more people had come running but as it had been with Avery I couldn’t turn. I couldn’t take my eyes from the man laying prone on the floor. His eyes were wide and unseeing.

“He doesn’t need anything Avery. Not anymore.” My voice sounded strange to me. Because it sounded so normal. And yet I couldn’t move.

I had seen death before. And the man on the floor, with his life’s blood seeping from his body, was dead.

Fender was dead.

I swallowed hard.

My dad was dead.

Someone had come in here and put a bullet in my father’s body. They had snuffed out his life like it meant nothing. He hadn’t even had a chance to defend himself.

“You.” My eyes rose to those of Gemma’s and the screams died on her lips. She shook her head. “No Ruin. You can’t think.” She was stumbling over her words. Her panic was tangible.

Of course, I thought it was her. I knew her history with my father. Everyone did. It was the worst-kept club secret. Fender played her, over and over again.

And she was right here. Standing over his body. And….. I shook my head. I couldn’t think.

“You have ….. I will kill you.” The rage overtook me.

“Think brother.” Gent was suddenly there. His bulk in front of me. “Gemma isn’t capable of this, she ….”

“Run Gemma.” My voice was icy. And I watched as real fear seeped into her eyes. “Because I am coming for you.”

Avery made a sound in the back of her throat. A strangled cry. I could hear Cali crying.

Mutely I watched as Gent steered Gem around the pool of blood. He was careful to keep his frame between us.

“You know this wasn’t her Ruin, just think.”

How could I think when I couldn’t even move? All I could do was stare down at the lifeless body of my father.
