Chapter Five
Cassie woke up andshe could hear voices before she opened her eyes. She realized she was tired down in a chair but she didn’t recognize any of the voices around her.Her jaw hurt when some bozo had struck her and she remembered his short visit. He had come through the window and when she was distracted by trying to get Sammy behind her, the man hit her and she felt Sammy’s little body run into hers just before she passed out.
She focused on what was going on around her but she didn’t feel as if her son had been taken as well. She finally cracked her eyes open to see where she was at.She was trying to look around carefully so the men here didn’t know she was awake. She had been tied to a chair, so it was hard to hide the fact that she was awake.Who were these guys and why had they taken her? They sort of looked like bikers. But how had they gotten into Troy without anybody knowing?
She quickly shut her eyes when she heard more than one pair of footsteps coming her way. She heard them all stop and someone dragged a chair over and sat down right in front of her.
Someone cleared his throat and she felt a light tap on her cheek.Cassie sat there then she slowly opened her eyes and the first thing she saw was a large man.
She glared at him then lifted her head and slowly looked at the other men around him.Her gaze halted on the man who had hit her.
The man looked away.
The large man who’d tapped her shoulder leaned forward a bit and stared at her for a long moment.“We never meant...”He shook his head.“To kidnap you.One of my men made a mistake.”
“A mistake?”she asked.
He nodded.“I just wanted to talk to you is all.I had him on the lookout. We were only gonna take you if we had to.”
Cassie slowly shook her head.“Well, here I am.You all are here too.Why am I here?”
“We don’t have to answer you.We ask the questions here,” the large man said.
Cassie leaned back.“Oh, is that right?Well, you’ll answer to my husband.Only he won’t ask you anything. He doesn’t like his family harmed. He’s not someone you should cross, but I guess you’ll find that out the hard way. He’ll be here soon enough.”
Another of them shook his head.“You got a mouth on you, little woman, that’s for sure.”He studied her and then said, “Most women caught in this sort of situation would be begging for mercy, not running her mouth.”
Cassie shrugged.“I ain’t most women.I’ve seen hell, so you fuckers can’t scare me.”
The first man shook his head.“Ok, lady, we came here to find out what happened to Robbie Pierce, that's all.You see Robbie took something from us and then he set me up to take a fall for him and I just spent ten years behind bars for something I didn’t do.”
“What do I have to do with Robbie Pierce?”Cassie asked in confusion.“I’ve only seen his ugly face once since I ran away from his mother’s house when I was ten fucking years old.”
The men glanced at each other then turned back to Cassie.“You lived in the same house as that little freak, though.”
Cassie nodded.“You got that right. He was a little freak and a monster. But I ran away when I was ten.”She shrugged.“Then about six years ago he found me and almost left me for wolf bait, but Deke found me before the wolves got too hungry.”She shook her head.“I heard he found Robbie a few days later and it was Robbie’s turn to be the wolf bait.I also heard he didn’t make it.Not real sorry to hear that though, I figure he got what he deserved, don’tcha think?”
The big man snorted.“Yeah, he got what he deserved all right, but you see that doesn’t help us get back what he stole from us, now does it?”
Cassie sat there and stared at him then shrugged.“Well, if he was stupid enough to take that shit home with him its long gone by now.Part of Janelle’s ring burned her house down to ashes. He did that while I was tied up in the basement. He meant to kill me and hide it with the house fire.He failed at that.My father-in-law got me out of the fire. There is nothing left in that house to find.”
The man and a couple of his other men clenched their fists.
One of them asked, “And just who is your father in law?”
Cassie turned her head and informed him, “He comes from a smaller town than Boston, in fact he grew up not far from there in Quincy. His name is Sam Tory. His road name is Bones.”
The whole room went silent at her words.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.You belong to the Tory family?”One man who hadn’t spoken before asked in disbelief.
Cassie paused.“You know Bones?”
“Yeah, I know Bones.”He looked around at his men and they could see as well as fear the unease in his body.He walked away then he stomped his way back and glared at her.“You said he got you out of a burning fire, how did that happen?”
Cassie sighed.“You know Jenelle Walden was running a kiddy porn ring, right?”
He nodded.“Yeah, we followed her story in the papers. What’s that got to do with this?”
