“Did Tarymn talk you into this? You don’t have to step down, Maxus.” He whispered when he reached him. Maxus made an unintelligible sound. Deltta pulled him into a hug. “I know I was a pain in the ass. But you don’t have to do this to make me feel better. I don’t have to be the alpha king.”

A breathy laugh filled his ears. Was he crying? Deltta pulled back, but Maxus held on.

“You’re the alpha king. I was holding on, waiting for this moment to come. I’m happy for you. You’re right where you belong. Don’t lose it this time.” Maxus patted his back. He stepped back, facing the room. “Let’s welcome our Alpha King.”

Deltta turned around to face the other alphas.

The alphas roared. Tarymn shouted the loudest. After a few minutes, the officiant stepped forward to start the ceremony.

Deltta sat down.

“Let’s begin,” the officiant said. The alphas gathered in front of him; their eyes cast low to show their submission to their alpha king. Deltta allowed his alpha scent to fill the room, exerting his dominance over the other alphas. He relaxed into the chair, settling back into his position as the strongest alpha.

The tension he’d lived with for five years slid off his shoulders; he could finally breathe easy again. For years, he’d had to hold back this side of himself, suppress his instinct to dominate and take over. No wonder he was such a pain in the ass.

But now…he was where he belonged, he thought, looking at his alphas.

“Congratulations, master,” Yarr said as he walked into the house.

“Thank you. It feels good to be back.” Deltta paused. “Do you still have Nylune’s code?”

“Yes.” Yarr pulled out his connector and gave it to him. Deltta gave him a slight nod and made his way to his room. There, he sat on the bed and tried to think of what to say to the omega. They hadn’t spoken since the incident five years ago. Deltta should have done better, but…he wasn’t in the right mind to contact him.

Just do it.

He took a deep breath and pressed Nylune’s code. Seconds ticked by, and he didn’t complete the connection.

Maybe he doesn’t want to talk to me, Deltta thought just as his voice came through.

“Yes, alpha king.”

“Nylune?” Deltta sat up straight. “I…”

“Congratulations, you deserve to be the alpha king again,” he said kindly.

“You deserve to be here too. Your job is available if you want it.”

Silence met his words. Was it weird for them to work together again?

“No. I’m fine where I am.”

Maybe it was weird.

“If you ever need anything. Please don’t hesitate to connect with me.”

“I will.” The connector went silent. Deltta stared at it. He hoped he was doing well wherever he was. Maybe he should find out from Maxus where he was.

No. Nylune would come to him if he needed help.

Deltta hoped.

Deltta

A few days later.

“Don’t you think it’s too soon for you to be going on an official trip?” Yarr asked beside him.
