I brought my pad and pen because I like to write, not type, when I’m doing notes. Plus, my keyboard will get all sticky because I’m planning on grabbing another donut. Of course, when we enter, the boys are digging into the food like they haven’t eaten in ages.

I immediately ask Brew, “How is Erica?” She’s only working part-time, but she’s usually here already so I immediately go into worry mode.

He looks up from licking icing from his fingers. “She has a doctor’s appointment, she’ll be in later.”

“You’re not going?” I blurt.

He sighs. “No, I’m not Little-Miss-Fix it. She’s just pickin’ up some prenatal vitamins if you must know. Anythin’ else I can enlighten you on, or can we get goin’?”

Oops.I guess I was poking my nose in a little, but they should be used to me by now.

“Sorry, Brewster, I just like to make sure my co-worker is okay, sue me.”

I love calling them annoying names, especially Brew, because he hates it.

“Don’t worry, he just woke up on the wrong side of the bed,” Logan says, chuckling. “Now are we gonna begin, because I’ve got shit to do and a delivery comin’ in a few hours.”

“Hold on to your panties,” Haze says, as I glance at Sawyer—he’s awfully quiet. “We’re gettin’ to it.”

“Yeah, what’s the big deal?” I ask, reaching for the donut box. I grab out a chocolate one covered with sprinkles. “It’s very cloak and dagger.”

“Maybe they’re given’ us a raise?” Sawyer says, grinning at me.

All the boys balk at once so that seems unlikely.

“Like we don’t pay you enough,” Brew mutters.

“Yeah, note taking isn’t within my normal job description,” I join in. “But I’m happy to take on Erica’s secretary duties until she’s had the baby, for a price.”

“She’s a fuckin’ Dawson,” Logan muses. “We’ve never been shy about goin’ after what we want.”

He has a point there; we are all kinda go-getters when you look at it. Logan rebuilding that rundown bar to what it is now — okay, it’s a glorified biker bar, but it’s still clean — and Brew and Haze establishing their own security business. A business that is thriving. They outsource a lot of detail, including a company who runs all the personal security, installs alarms, and security cameras, but I know they want to move most of that in-house. More profit, fewer wages.

“Touche,” I say, setting my donut down onto my napkin. “So, boys, we can discuss my fee later. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty before the doors open. I’ve got work to do.”

CHAPTER

NINE

Sawyer

Nova handles her cousins like a knife through butter, and I can’t help but admire that trait.

Of course, they give each other shit, but there’s also a lot of love in this room, not that any of them would admit it. They treat Nova like the little sister they never had, and even though they bicker, I can tell she’s completely comfortable with all of them.

I shouldn’t have done what I did in the kitchen. Ishouldn’thave kissed her here, or whateverthatlip sucking thing was. I couldn’t help myself. And I know I’m sending mixed messages, but she’s the one who kept going on about us bothhaving needs. After last night’s texting marathon, I’ve started to wonder if we could do the friends with benefits thing. Anexclusivefriends with benefits because I don’t want no other man touching her, not that she’d let them, but I’m admittedly just as jealous as she is.

“We’re expandin’,” Brew declares. “Too much money is bein’ spent on outside contractors. While we don’t have the manpower to do everythin’ in-house at the moment, now is the perfect time to start trainin’ a team that is.”

“Been runnin’ the numbers,” Logan cuts in. “And we could turn this business upside down if we can keep as much as we can under one roof. We’ve all been busy, and we’re all stretched to capacity, so recruitin’ would be our best option, but that comes at a cost and then there’s findin’ the right people.”

“I can put an advert out,” I say. “I can draft something up if you can tell me what qualifications they need to have.”

“Already got JJ, Chains and Giggs happy to step in and learn the ropes,” Haze says. “They’re all reliable and ready to work, plus, it’ll keep the club coffers overflowin’, which means Cash will be happy.”

“Two birds, one stone,” I agree. “I assume you’d prefer to start with security camera installation? Then maybe patrols until we have a reliable crew. There’s high demand for security around the car yards and hotels, as well as private properties.”

“Yes, but we’ll keep the resident hacking to just you.” Haze grins. “What we need is manpower out there where it counts.”
