I glance sideways and Cash signals everyone to move and I run. I don’t think, I just fucking run. Firing as bullets dodge past me, I dive over the makeshift stage when I’m all out of ammo. Using my fists, I punch my way through two guys before Pipes shoots the one aiming a gun at my head.
“Thanks, bro,” I mutter.
“Anytime,” he says as I search around for the suit. It’s then I spot Forest, lying on the floor a few feet away. They were protecting him.
I move over, grabbing him by the lapels of his bloodied jacket.No. No!
I yank on him. “Where is he? Regi?”
“F-fuck you.” Blood is oozing from his chest and mouth, and I know he hasn’t got long.
I yank him again. “Don’t you people have any fuckin’ conscience?”
He chokes as he tries to smirk.
I won’t give him the satisfaction. I pin him down, choking him with my bare hands while he struggles beneath me and my brother and whoever else is behind me fends everyone else off. He doesn’t even put up a fight, the fucking pussy.
I don’t stop until he’s limp, unmoving underneath me. It doesn’t feel enough. It doesn’t feel like anything. I search his pockets, yanking out his phone and wallet. Now I have his phone, I can find out everything there is to know about fucking Regi. He may not be here, and we may not have him today, but we thwarted another shipment that he’ll have lost money on. The thought makes me smile, but it doesn’t last long. It won’t last until this motherfucker is six feet under.
I let him flop back to the ground as the fray behind me clears.
“We got ‘em,” Logan says, crouching near me.
“Thought you were out covering the road?” I say, stepping over Forest’s dead body.
He smirks. “And miss all the fun? I don’t think so.”
“Our main lead is dead, but I’ve got his cell.”
“Think you can find the other asshole?”
“He’ll likely go underground after this, but it’ll just mean we’ve gotta work harder,” I say. I admit, I’m bummed he didn’t show, but from what Barry told us, he was never going to.
Laying low after the gas leak situation, and now this? He knows the two are connected.
“We’ll get him,” Pipes says, falling into step beside me. “This isn’t over.”
The carnage around us is a blood bath, but Stella is calming the girls as she helps lead them outside.
“Gotta clean this up,” Cash says. “Haze has gotta make the call in a few, round up all the bodies and a couple still alive for the warehouse, we better make sure they don’t know something we’re not privy to.”
Good, it’ll give me an opportunity to rip the heart right out of Barry’s chest while I’m at it.
My prez’s eyes flick to mine. “You good?”
I nod. The boys did good and I don’t wanna take away from what we achieved here. Getting those girls to safety is more important than my revenge. That can wait for another day. This at least sated the monster inside of me for a little longer.
“He just choked a man to death,” Logan says proudly. “The suit.”
“Forest,” I tell him. “He was dyin’ anyway, I wouldn’t have gotten anythin’ out of him, but I did get his cell, and his ID.” I flip out the wallet. “Goes by the name of David Forest. I’ll look into him as soon as I get back.”
Cash frowns. “Go be with your woman, we can take care of this.”
I shake my head. “All for one and one for all.”
He chuckles. “We’re not the Three Musketeers.”
“We’re headin’ out to the bayou,” Tag says from behind me. “If you wanna ride with us.”
