“What? I’m the limping wounded!” Beks was so pretty when she teased.

She tossed Beks a coat and fixed the hat over Bek’s toes. “That needs duct tape.”

“That’ll leave a mark on my pretty cast.”

Beks actually meant that, and it was adorable. “I don’t have tape anyway, goof. Ribbon maybe. Something. We’ll see what we find.” She took the handles of the chair. “Are you ready?”

“I am! You make breaking my leg almost fun!” Nut. This woman was a—

“Oh, hey y’all!” A woman in jeans and pigtails ran up as soon as they came down the elevator. “I was so sorry to hear about your accident, and on your honeymoon, no less. I have vouchers for coffee and goodies at Caffeine Ivy’s, the spa here, the bookstore, and the art co-op. Also, my wife and I want to offer you a winter sleigh ride. I’m Cheyenne, by the way.”

“Marissa,” She nodded a greeting. “And this is Rebekka. A sleigh ride sounds like so much fun, thank you.” This whole honeymoon thing was going to be hilarious to tell people about one day.

“This place is magical, isn’t it, Mari? Like seriously magical.” Beks stared up at her, and the temptation to lean down and kiss her was huge.

Not wise, but huge.

“If you feel that way now, wait until you get in the sleigh. And visit the bazaar. Town is beautiful all done up for the holidays.”

“We were just headed there for some pizza.” And beer. She really needed a beer.

“Have fun! Here are your vouchers. Everyone’s excited to meet and spoil you.” Cheyenne handed over a fancy envelope.

“Thank you. Sounds great.” She took it and handed it to Beks to hold onto. “We’ll call about the sleigh ride soon.”

“It’ll be uber-romantic. I promise.”

Uber-romantic.Whoa.

Okay, so maybe they wouldn’t call. This pretending to be married thing was getting a little intense.

“I’ve never taken a sleigh ride. Have you? I’ll have to take a thousand pictures. This is amazing.” Beks waved to Cheyenne. “Y’all rock!”

“Actually it does sound pretty cool. But I kind of feel bad that we’re taking all this stuff for free, and we aren’t really on a honeymoon.” She pushed Bek’s chair toward the shuttle they were taking into town, grinning. “Not bad enough not to get a free coffee though.”

“We’re here. We can pretend and make memories, right? Is that awful?”

It wasn’t awful, it was just awkward. The lie she could handle because she had tried to cancel and was asked to come anyway. But spending all this time with Rebekka was…

Okay, so, not as bad as it would have sounded had she known Beks would be here. But way back when, she and Beks had burned bright in the bedroom and otherwise pissed each other off continually.

She was lazy, and Beks barely slept. She was practical, and Beks read tarot. She was focused on a career, and Beks was always saying something would work out.

Never mind that they both got what they wanted, that was beside the point.

Unless it was the point…

“I’m up for making memories.” She obviously had a lot with Beks already.

“Me too. They can replace the hurting ones. We’ll have a new reading.” Beks winked at her, staring at her upside down. “I pulled the Hanged Man this morning. Usually it tells me to shut up and listen. Maybe today it meant, watch out for that tree.”

“Maybe it meant you can’t see everything coming.” She winked right back and rolled Bek’s chair onto the shuttle’s wheelchair lift.

“This is true, but I’m going to try!” Beks laughed, and Marissa had to smile.

It wasn’t a long ride into town, but it was pretty. Snow and the trees and the blue sky opened up to a cute little town decorated with wreaths and garland, with shop windows full of fake snow and holiday cheer.

“Goddess, this is charming!” Beks stared out the window, lips in a bow. She narrated everything they passed, and it was, mostly, charming.
